Unless you want to watch a story that come to a completely downbeat ending with the total triumph of evil I'm not necessarily against downbeat stories, if they earn the serious artistic stripes to claim my hard-won empathy. But Senorita 89 wants to have to be both an over-the-top, oh-no-she-didn't, trashy entertainment, AND a heavy-hitter in the gravitas department think say, Shutter Island , a work that leaves you devastated but so deeply moved you're willing to feel the pain. I must have taped this as I usually watched whichever "noir" series the BBC fills this spot with so wasn't really sure what it was. Set in on the surface it is about a beauty pageant, but takes a look at what is going on behind the scenes and the pressures on the contestants. And then one of them dies. Also has a young female academic who is there to provide culture to the contestants, but she really wants to tell them they can be more than their bodies. But are they in fact making the best material choice given their impoverished back grounds? Please note: some scenes of sexual violence. Not quite the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but just a warning. I wonder what anyone else makes of it. I feel asleep as I started watching late so cant really judge! We watched it last night - i think it will be quite good. Looks like the whole thing is a cover up for prostitution - not really a surprise! Title should have said BBC 4 which has been the noir spot on saturdays for some time now. Yes, its a Mexico tv series. So has sub titles as mostly in Spanish. I'm still watching week by week and like they way they are showing the reality of some women's lives without it being a lecture.
New This Week.
The opening sequence of the first episode points toward a tragic conclusion, imbuing each scene that follows with a palpable sense of melancholy dread. A shred of hope then emerges, which kept me watching with rapt attention through to the end of the second episode, which is all that I've seen so far. Set during a glamourous period in Mexico during the late s, the eight-episode series rewinds a few months from the tragic event to see what led to it, beginning with the arrival of 32 women from across the country to a gorgeously-appointed estate in the countryside. They have all accepted an offer to receive three months of training in order to prepare fully for a national beauty pageant. To an outsider without much abiding interest in such things, it sounds like a great deal. The women will be trained by experts in their respective fields, so they can learn how to apply makeup better, how to dress better, how to compete better, and, maybe, how to win the coveted crown.

The women will be trained by experts in their respective fields, so they can learn how to apply makeup better, how to dress better, how to compete better, and, maybe, how to win the coveted crown. All they have to do is sign a multi-page contract and not have any contact with anyone outside of the estate for the duration of their stay. If it all sounds too good to be true, then you've probably seen a movie or television show before. The first episode, for example, revolves around Elena Ximena Romo , who is preparing for a Master's degree at a university when she applies for a job teaching general knowledge at a national beauty pageant, Miss Mexico.
