The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth is nearly here , and we have some fantastic new cards to work with for casual and competitive Commander decks alike. On top of the cards just being cool, they're also, you know, from The Lord of the Rings. I love this. I'm so excited about this series of cards that I'll be providing a few different Legendary Creatures a look over the next few weeks, creating my own take on brewing them for competitive and casual Commander play. Some of those will probably be pretty low power, and some, like this week, will still be pretty powerful. Today's focus is Sauron, the Dark Lord. Yes, the big bad himself! What attracted me to this Commander? Let's get into it. Why Sauron? Simply put — he's pretty awesome and powerful. His Ward ability makes it difficult for opponents to remove. Sauron gives you value every time an opponent casts a spell, eternally amassing his Orc army.

Drown in the Loch.

At long last, I am here. Sauron, The Dark Lord is an absolute bomb of a commander who is not only very hard to remove and in the context of some games almost impossible! Our deck is entirely focused on comboing off as quickly as possible in all of the expected CEDH ways but with Sauron if we are against a stax heavy table or need to go long we have a huge advantage! Being able to recycle your hand in this lightning fast deck can be a really strong way to assemble combos! Without further adieu lets get it!

If that creature is legendary, its controller loses 3 life. Drowned Catacomb. Brewing up Sauron, the Dark Lord at two different power levels was a fun challenge, where I think he has a fighting chance in both competitive and more casual environments — if you can ever get the six mana for him. Gemstone Caverns. Mindbreak Trap. Interestingly enough, I think the Orc Archer will be especially good in this deck as it helps remove pesky blockers for our Orc army.
