In " War ", it is revealed that the reason she intends on dividing Humanity is so that when the Relics are brought together, The Gods will destroy Remnant and in turn, break the curse on her allowing her to die. She is the protagonist of The Girl in the Tower , a fairy tale which details her early life. In " Ruby Rose ", the first episode of the series, Salem serves as the narrator, giving the opening voice-over for the series, but credited only as " Mysterious Narrator" in " Black and White " and " Breach " until her first on-screen appearance in the Volume 3 finale, " End of the Beginning ". In ancient times, Salem was a woman with fair skin, pale platinum blonde hair and light blue eyes. She wore most of her hair in a half up-done bun style with a small, simple bun on the top, and the remainder of her long, straight hair hanging at the bottom. Most of her bangs were tied back, barring several large locks that framed her face to her left. She wore a white two piece dress consisting of a sleeveless, diagonally overlapping white backless pleated top with a raised pale blue halter-top square collar adorned with an aquamarine colored rhombus-shaped crystal on the clavicle surrounded by two smaller white rhombuses. While Salem's subordinates believe she's seeking to create a new world order, Ozpin reveals that she's actually trying to destroy the world itself. She also uses the narration to hint at a deeper, darker, history of humanity that has been forgotten by all but a few such as her and Ozpin. Ozpin has been tasked by the God of Light to unite humanity and redeem them in the eyes of the brother Gods. Salem controls the Grimm and uses them as shock troops, while also recruiting both humans and Faunus to carry out the tasks she needs to achieve her endgame. After failing to either kill the gods or incite them into destroying her to end her curse, she finally ends up at the Pools of Grimm. In both cases, it's a hint that they are ancient beings who were born long before the war was ever fought. With the casual ease of a dinner conversationalist, she tasks her subordinates with duties that will enable terrorism, murder and mayhem, and teaches that flaunting the power to destroy lives is unnecessary when anyone can be exploited. In pursuit of a new world , no cost is too great.
