Hanamichi Sakuragi is a delinquent very unpopular with girls, having been rejected an astonishing fifty times. Sakuragi is reluctant to join the team at first, but he proves to be a natural athlete and joins the team, mainly in the hopes of impressing and getting closer to Haruko. The character was created as Inoue's self insert in the manga as, during his youth, Inoue started playing basketball to impress girls. Critical response to Sakuragi has been positive as a result of his development, characterization and growth into a more careful player who grows to care about his new career. He has also been used to promote related merchandise and appeared in several popularity polls of the series. His jersey number is 10 and he is a freshman grade ten at Shohoku High.

When he was a freshman during his flashback, Miyagi's school uniform is dark blue like the other freshman students such as his basketball teammates, Sakuragi and Rukawa. Like Sakuragi, Miyagi is motivated to play by his love for a girl: his best friend and classmate Ayako, the manager of the team, whom he refers to as "Aya-chan". He has been known to pose for Ayako during matches. Off-court, Miyagi has a reputation for being a bad boy. He was hospitalized for a while after his fight against Mitsui's gang.
Sakuragi's love for Haruko makes him a better player as well as a person throughout the series. The arrival of Sakuragi's gang enables Mitsui and Sakuragi to break away and head to the 3rd round match which they are late forsakuragi number, and results in the trouncing of Ryu and his gang members. They are the only non-seeded team to make it to the final four of the Kanagawa Inter-high Tournament, their sole loss being against eventual prefecture champion Kainan.
