He served as a retainer for the samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu and became well known for his abilities as a warrior. As with many larger-than-life individuals, his legend has grown with time. In a competing legend, his mother gave birth to him in what is now Sakata, Yamagata. She was forced to flee, however, due to fighting between her husband, a samurai named Sakata, and his uncle. She finally settled in the forests of Mount Ashigara to raise her son. His only other belonging was a hatchet ono or masakari. He was bossy to other children or there simply were no other children in the forest , so his friends were mainly the animals of Mt. Kintoki and Mt. He was also phenomenally strong, able to smash rocks into pieces, uproot trees, and bend trunks like twigs. His animal friends served him as messengers and mounts, and some legends say that he even learned to speak their language. He met the samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu as he passed through the area around Mt. He eventually went back for his mother and brought her to Kyoto as well. For example, the manga and anime Golden Boy stars a character with the same name. This seems to glorify his strength as he is able to wrestle with such a creature. A shrine dedicated to the folk hero lies at the foot of Mount Ashigara in the Hakone area near Tokyo.

Sakata Kintoki is one of the Einherjar , set to fight in a future match of Ragnarok. Kintoki takes the form a young and muscular man with sharp but short blond hair. He wore an open jacket revealing a sculpted abs and a pair of hakama pants. He has a distinct and large scar running from the right side of his forehead to about the end of his nose. He wears a bandana with a unknown sharp horn-protusion on his right side of his head. He sports what seem to resemble geta sandals with blade like edges on the bottom like those of ice skating shoes.

In the frame to the right, Minamoto no Yorimitsu, Watanabe no Tsuna, Urabe no Suetake, and Hirai no Yasumasa are depicted; while in the left-sided frame are a monkey, rabbit, battle-axe, and the Yama-uba, with Mt. Fuji as its backdrop, as in the Nishikie print of Yoshitsuya. This scene is an impactful full screen composition in which Kintaro subdues Raijin by gripping his horns. Kintaro capturing the Thunder God as a subject for painting can be seen in many works, including those in Kusazoshi picture books after the Horeki period; Ukiyo-e of the Kansei period; and miniature books of the Meiji period.
