At the general store, she introduces herself as Katie Feldman. After getting a job as a waitress, and renting a small house on the edge of town, Katie befriends her neighbor Jo and meets Alex Wheatley, a widowed father of two young children: Josh, whose relationship with him is strained, and Lexie, who helps him in the general store. Alex soon gives Katie a bicycle so she won't have to walk.

It made me feel stupid for spending the time to read this book. When Alex looks to see what has drawn her attention, he is spurred into action at the sight of his son struggling in the water. What caught my attention was the latter half part of the book, and the twist at the end The Sixth Sense much. She constantly fought to not give up, so full of faith. Sparks tried to make Kevin's character multilayered and it was a nice try but Sparks did not explain his background. All of them! She says she is thankful for whoever is now reading the letter and thanks the reader for making Alex feel young and in love again. Even the battered wife part.
