We seek to share the story of Harlem with our guests and offer a space that celebrates local artists, musicians and culinary talents alike. Named in honor of the legendary Harlem speakeasy that attracted neighborhood folk, jazz greats, and noteworthy figures of the 20th century; from Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Harlem, located in the northern part of Manhattan in New York City, is a historically significant and culturally vibrant neighborhood known for its rich African American heritage, jazz and artistic renaissance during the early 20th century, and diverse culinary scene. It has been a hub of creativity, social change, and cultural expression, with iconic landmarks like the Apollo Theater and institutions like the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Harlem's streets are alive with a blend of historic brownstones, lively street vendors and a thriving arts scene, making it a dynamic and enduring symbol of African American culture and urban life in America. Harlem's food history can be traced back to the late 19th century when the neighborhood began to attract a diverse population, including African Americans migrating from the South, European immigrants, and Caribbean immigrants. Each group brought their own culinary traditions, contributing to the neighborhood's culinary diversity. In the early 20th century, Harlem was the epicenter of the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural and artistic movement that celebrated African American culture. This era saw the emergence of notable restaurants, clubs, and speakeasies, such as the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom, where jazz music and innovative cuisine thrived. African American chefs and restaurateurs gained recognition for their culinary skills during this time. Harlem has also been a significant incubator for soul food, a cuisine that draws heavily from African, African American, and Southern culinary traditions.

The start of our restaurant hatched from the hope of providing a comfortable, bright, one-of-a-kind space where people can gather to enjoy breakfast and brunch fare made with the highest quality ingredients. We are so proud to be a part of two vibrant, diverse neighborhoods in the St. Louis area. Our South Grand location houses a very important and unique operation. It is the central kitchen and production hub for all of our kitchens, established so we could make everything possible in-house. Our Commissary includes our own bakery and butcher shop, so we are able to do some amazing things we have always dreamt about doing, including baking every single bread, bun, and dessert that we serve, making all of our ice cream in house, and preparing meat that is always hormone-free and ethically raised. We do all of this so we can give our customers the best foods we possibly can.
The frontrunners in their categories get recognition and applause, and then, being the hardest grinding bosses in the biz, they get right back to work. Starting with a little joint where we like to shed all pretense and expectations. Started by Bob and Corrine Frick, it was intended to be a family-friendly, neighborhood joint where people could head after a softball game, or gather for birthday brews. It was casual by design, and that remains a guiding principle of their business to this day, 30 years later. That and their famously fresh and never frozen wings. The success of the formula resulted in a second location in Columbus on Hamilton Road, followed by the now-classic location in German Village. It was here that Dan Ponton joined the team as an owner, and today he is the president of the company.

A few months ago, we reported the remodeling and expansion of Roosters Breakfast and Mimosas. Around that time, the owners were also working on a new concept called Roosters on the River at Garden Highway. The new Rooster was originally planned for December, although delays in permits and construction have slightly pushed the opening back. A new digital sign went up in early November, but final permits were not approved until mid-late November. Construction has since begun, and the new restaurant is anticipated to open soon. The space, previously occupied by Pearl on the River, is a 5,square-foot space with a 1,square-foot deck. Construction documents showed the space required new equipment, plumbing, and upgraded lighting. The restaurant will also paint the exterior walls for a brighter, livelier look.
