On television and in film, creators have been granted the freedom to upend traditional expectations for the genre. Glossy candlelit love scenes are out, replaced by rawer and more naturalistic depictions of sex. Happy endings, too, have given way to bittersweet conclusions and melancholy.

As a fan of the genre, I keep an eye out for any new romantic comedies, and this year, there are a handful. There are even several that are great, and even for the ones that are not as great, they still have plenty of appeal, if you, like me, will never give up on these movies. Brace yourself for Lake Bell with a British accent, but once you get past that, Man Up is the latest in a long tradition of irreverent, sweet, British romantic comedies. Simon Pegg is a man we all love but rarely see as a leading man, but you'll crush on him after seeing this. It was one of the worst-reviewed movies of the year, but there is still something to be said for how cute Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone are together. There's dancing, flirty looks, and the kind of adorable chemistry that will probably make you want to see them team up again for another movie or you know, in real life. How could a romantic comedy with Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie be anything less than hilarious and delightful? Disclaimer: this romantic comedy is not so original with its premise a cute guy falls for the perfect girl, who is already engaged to a douche. However, the cute guy in question is played by Chris Evans, who is both incredibly sexy and rarely out of his Captain America uniform these days, and he's playing a screenwriter who's tasked to actually write a romantic comedy.
