But with so many announcements of top pilots and jaw-dropping aircraft, it can be hard to remember exactly what crowds will be in for at this year's RIAT, Friday, July 14 to Sunday, July 1.

Following an exceptionally hot and dry , this year saw far more unsettled conditions with the organisers and participants battling wind and rain throughout the weekend. However, they prevailed on all three days to present a superb showcase of military aviation to huge crowds. After the three-year hiatus due to the covid pandemic, had been a triumphant return for the Royal International Air Tattoo with almost everything seeming to go the way of the RIAT organisers — big crowds, some superb participation from across the world and truly exceptional sunny weather. One road which forms the Purple Route and the Blue Exit route was specifically recommissioned for the show with three temporary bridges over the subsiding areas — it looked an expensive installation but helped enormously aid the flow away from Fairford at the end of the day! The Royal International Air Tattoo is a curious beast. Moreover, many have passionate — and conflicting — opinions about which category each edition of the show falls into. The build-up to the event each year is an emotional rollercoaster, with erratic highs and lows that far surpass what most announcements individually justify, as the soap opera of Thursday lunchtime updates gradually reveals the line up. In the interest of full disclosure, this is not quite a typical airshow review; this year, I attended the Air Tattoo across all six days as a member of the PlanesTV team, working as a camera operator for their live broadcast and co-hosting the streams of arrivals and departures. My experience did not, therefore, come close to representing that of a ticket holder.
