After archeologists found human remains in a section of Red Bank Battlefield Park last year, they realized the work to uncover the stories of the Hessian soldiers killed there years ago was just beginning. On Oct. Hessian soldiers, fighting for the British, vastly outnumbered about American revolutionaries Black and white, side by side from Rhode Island and New Jersey in the Battle of Fort Mercer. When the fighting was over, about Hessians were killed or wounded — with just 14 casualties on the American side. It was the Hessians' worst defeat in a war that was not their own. The finds also included a rare King George III coin the equivalent of a soldier's salary for a month ; a knee buckle from a uniform that had traces of blood; pewter and brass buttons; and munitions.
