Although Rauru has an important part to play in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom , being the first king of Hyrule and the Source of the Right Arm, little else is known about him. The name Rauru has also appeared in other titles in the series, leading fans to question the connection between the character and these references. Rauru first appears to Link as a spirit , acting as a guide as he completes the Shrines of Light on the Great Sky Island. Link also learns that his new right arm once belonged to Rauru. Ganondorf murdered Sonia, stealing her Secret Stone to amplify his strength. In a last attempt to protect Hyrule, Rauru sacrificed himself to save his kingdom and seal away Ganondorf , knowing that Link would continue to fight for Hyrule in the future.

It continues where its predecessor, Breath of the Wild , left off, as Link and Zelda discover the Demon King Ganondorf underneath Hyrule Castle just as he broke free of what was chaining him down. After the encounter, Link is left with a strange new arm, a broken Master Sword , and a missing Princess to find and save. If fans think the name Rauru sounds familiar, it's because Rauru is also a prominent character in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Tears of the Kingdom isn't the first time that there's been a Sage of Light named Rauru. The Rauru from Ocarina of Time was known for building the Temple of Time, which was inspired by the story of Link's time travel adventures in Skyward Sword. While there is also a Rauru Town in The Adventure of Link , the two Sages seem to be purposefully connected rather than ending up as a simple coincidence in Hyrulian history. King Rauru in particular ironically wears a medallion that resembles OoT's Rauru's face. When King Rauru's medallion is flipped upside down, it resembles the owl form of the other Sage of Light, known as Kaepora Gaebora. However, just what ties them together is still unclear as of right now. The use of the name "Rauru" could be easily written off as a common name in the Zelda universe that could have started with Tears of the Kingdom 's Rauru , the medallion that looks like the other Sage of Light implies otherwise. However, it's difficult to say just how the two are connected as it hasn't been made clear where The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom fall in the timeline just yet. Although Rauru sacrificed himself to seal away Ganondorf underneath Hyrule Castle, it's clear that his spirit has lived on beyond this heroic act as his spirit speaks to Link once he awakens with his arm attached.

Ocarina of Time. Sacred Realm Temple of Light. After Link wakes up from his seven-year slumber, he encounters Rauru in the Sacred Realm. Rauru proceeds to explain why Link was trapped in there for seven years, and also tells him that while he slept, Ganondorf had free access to the Sacred Realm and consequently to the Triforce. He then gained the power to take over Hyrule. Finally, he reveals Link's destiny: to become the Hero of Time. Then, he tells Link to find the other Sages and add their power to his own, giving him the Light Medallion.

King Rauru was a Zonai , whose ancestors came down from the heavens a long time ago and were said to be descendants of gods. With the power of the Secret Stones , which possessed immense power, he became a great leader and met Sonia , his future wife. After some time Rauru would give Sonia a Secret Stone and together founded an unspecified iteration of the kingdom of Hyrule. It is possible that Hyrule may have been destroyed once before the mentioned founding. Some years passed, and both Rauru and Sonia stumbled upon Princess Zelda , who had traveled back in time, unconscious in the forest. When Zelda woke up, she presented herself as the daughter of King Rhoam of Hyrule, which confused the two as they were the first king and queen.

During the Era of Chaos and shortly before the Kingdom of Hyrule was established by the link royal descendants of the goddess Hylia 's mortal incarnation , Rauru built the Temple of Time over the remains of the Sealed Temple that was located deep within the Faron Woods in the Faron Province. In doing this, he protected the Triforce from the chaotic Interloper War being fought over its ownership at the time. After Link defeats Gohma in a failed attempt to save the Great Deku Tree , he leaves the Kokiri Forest and has his first encounter with Rauru, who awaits him in his owl form as Kaepora Gaebora at the edge of the woods. The owl gives him encouragement on the adventure the Great Deku Tree has tasked him with and advises him to visit Princess Zelda at Hyrule Castle before leaving with a promise that they will meet again.
