We lived in a bungalow on the Tsrios estate in Limassol. The estate was mainly bungalows owned by Greek Cypriots and were dowry houses. In so far as in the tenancy agreement was the stipulation that if the daughter of the owner got married then likely as not we would have to vacate the property. They were the then resident United Nations British regiment based at the camp. Anyone else no matter who is an invited guest under the invitation of the RSM. Over the ensuing few years we met and socialised with men from the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Contingents. We visited Paphos and Polis in the main outside of Limassol.

RAF Fylingdales has played a crucial part in our national security since , but to the public it's still something of a mystery. Over the years, a fascinating collection of artefacts has been gathered, and we're working to create an online archive to share this incredible history with everyone. When you think about space, you might think of the heady days of Apollo and Sputnik, of Armstrong and Gagarin. However, the story didn't end there. The Space Race was followed by the era of the Shuttle, space station Mir, satellite communications and more recently the Space X projects. Over the next 10 years, Space X will deploy thousands of satellites to form their Starlink communication network. The satellites were placed in a Low Earth Orbit, just km mi above us. It is normally at an altitude of less than km but could be as low as km above Earth. Unfort unately, in August some of the Starlink spacecraft were involved in a near-miss collision with a European Space Agency weather satellite. First, it reminded us of how some aspects of our everyday lives - such as weather forecasting - depend on the technology in Low Earth Orbit. Second, it highlighted the problem of active space craft being surrounded by 'space junk', hundreds of thousands of pieces of debris posing collision risks. The Low Earth Orbit environment is an important, busy, yet little-known space. It could be the site of future geopolitical tension.
However, its presence has not come without controversy as some have deemed it an environmental disturbance or even an eyesore on the serene Yorkshire moors.
RAF Fylingdales. The pyramid shaped structure is a solid-state phased-array radar SSPAR , which was built to replace the radomes seen behind. Each module has a circularly-polarised antenna and the radar has a range of miles. Based in North Yorkshire, the site and its staff provide a continuous ballistic missile early warning service to the United Kingdom and United States, monitoring the world's airspace. Fylingdales communicates and shares information with the two other sites, before it is passed on to the UK and US governments. In the case of spotting a ballistic missile, personnel at the station have to check their systems are working and inform the authorities within 60 seconds. Five crews man the radar 24 hours a day, days a year and are supported by around 50 other RAF personnel. The radar is made up of thousands of transmit-and-receive diodes positioned on either side of the building.

This project aims to turn RAF Fylingdales inside out , making its practices and functions visible and demystifying its operations in space monitoring and ballistic missile early warning. The Royal Air Force, which operates this highly secure site, is acutely aware of the need for greater public knowledge and understanding about the station and its functions, and are project partners in the research along with English Heritage. The research team are motivated by a commitment to greater academic and public understanding of space monitoring and nuclear deterrence , which remain little known and poorly understood beyond specialist circles. Fylingdales Archive holds a collection of objects , documents , magazines and photographs of RAF Fylingdales dating back to The principal task of this online resource is to make public the collection of Fylingdales Archive. The collection has been preserved since by a number of US and UK service personnel based at the station. These items capture the technical advances in radar and space monitoring from the late 50s and early 60s. Fylingdales Archive also shows how this technology developed in response to the geopolitical tensions of the time, brought about by the development of extremely powerful nuclear weapons and advances in space technology.
