A former product designer now crafts quilts using the design tool she knows best—giving whole new meaning to moving rectangles in Figma. It was , the pandemic had irrevocably changed the nature of work, and Nicole Boettcher was ready for a change. Having spent two-and-a-half years as a product designer at Artsy, an online marketplace for art, Nicole was eager to pick up a craft that would involve working with her hands. Teaching herself to quilt meant scouring the web for tutorials from other artists and trying her hand—literally—at beginner patterns. And when she was ready to create her own designs, she reached for the tool she knew best: Figma. Everything needs to be measured to the quarter inch, and Figma is a great tool for that.

In between quilting custom quilts, I try to always quilt a few allover type quilts. It is a nice break from the concentration it requires to get a custom quilt done. I love the creativity in custom quilting, but it can be mentally and physically exhausting. Doing a few allovers before starting my next custom job really helps to re-motivate and re-energize me. I had the pleasure to quilt a very inspirational quilt for Pam. She was gifting it to someone who had lost a loved one far too soon. The pattern is called Guiding Stars.
