For every villain that rests in the entire expansive rogue's gallery of Batman, one villain stands tall with the unique distinction that few - if any - other villains hold over him: he was the only man to literally, physically, and mentally break the Bat. That man is none other than Bane. Bane's first appearance came in Vengeance of Bane 1 , but he is best remembered for the chaos he causes in the Knightfall story arc, specifically running Batman into a brief retirement. The retirement didn't last too long, but it was long enough to maintain Bane's status as one of Batman's greatest rivals for several decades now. The only problem is that Bane's iconography is so engraved in Knightfall that some fans don't know much about his history outside of that story arc. There is much more to Bane than just breaking the Bat.
