Prisoners 2013
The Prisoners ending adds to the highly complex and dark nature of the detective-thriller from Denis Villeneuve. The film tells the gut-wrenching story of a family Thanksgiving dinner that ends with two young girls disappearing. The film's central two characters, Keller Dover and Detective Loki played by Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal respectively, are then taken on a complex ride as both try to figure out the mystery through their own means, leading to the unforgettable Prisoners ending. Keller Dover, the father of Anna, one of the missing children, goes to a dark place in Prisoners , even kidnapping and torturing a person of his own, Alex Jones, in his search for answers making it a gripping movie about moral dilemmas. Eventually, Dover finds out that Alex Jones is actually Barry Milland and was kidnapped by his "mother" Holly Jones, who has taken Keller's daughter and her friend Joy. Prisoners' ending sees Keller left in a pit beneath Holly's house after Loki exposes Holly and saves Anna. Prisoners reaches this endpoint through a series of twists and turns and leaves its ending purposely ambiguous. One of the biggest questions the Prisoners ending leaves is why Holly Jones, played by Melissa Leo, and her husband prior to his disappearance were kidnapping children in the first place. While Prisoners does answer this, the film's complex emotional story can allow certain aspects to become lost beneath the hard-hitting way the movie is presented. Also, as Holly is introduced early in the film, things that are revealed about her when she is "innocent" in the eyes of the audience can be forgotten once the reveal of her true nature comes to light. Throughout the film, it is revealed that Holly and her husband adopted Alex Jones, played by Paul Dano of recent The Batman fame , after the death of their own son to cancer. Throughout the film, Alex is shown to be intellectually disabled, having the IQ of a year-old. It is revealed that this disability comes from the trauma of his own kidnapping by Holly, with her reasoning revealed to Keller later after he figures out Holly's crimes. Holly reveals to Keller that, in revenge against God for allowing their son to die of cancer, she and her husband began kidnapping children of Christian families so that these families would feel a similar crisis of faith that they felt. This war on God was carried out over decades with Alex Jones being one victim.
Dover would later learn that Alex actually comforted the girls when his "aunt" actually kidnapped them.
It's been a decade since fans initially saw Prisoners and watched Hugh Jackman portray a father who decided to take matters into his own hands after his daughter and her friend were kidnapped on Thanksgiving Day. As we all know the terror the Wolverine actor can strike into anyone, watching him stop at nothing to get his daughter back was a true eye-opener. From personally torturing a potential suspect to evading the police because he felt like they were dragging their feet on the investigation, audiences were rooting for Keller Dover Jackman to get justice for his daughter no matter the cost. Unfortunately, as the storyline became so meticulously intertwined in the end, plenty of Prisoners fans may have missed a couple of the truly incredible details that the writers threw into the original ending. By no means was this story a situation where everyone lived happily ever after, but some brutal justice was served to more people than you may think.

Now Villeneuve has made his first English-language film, Prisoners, a long, brutal and occasionally gripping forensic crime drama. Hugh Jackman stars as a man whose little daughter has been kidnapped; Jake Gyllenhaal is the cop assigned to the case, and Paul Dano is the disturbed individual who holds the key to the whole thing. This movie keeps plenty of suspects in play, along with multiple plotlines running and plates spinning. It all finally ties up — sort of. Prisoners is as involved and twisty as any airport bestseller: not an adaptation, though, but an original screenplay by the TV writer-producer Aaron Guzikowski. It obviously aspires to something more than pulp, with the pluralities of meaning in the title. The film gestures at agonised questions of guilt, crime and punishment: on the poster, the haggard and bearded Jackman has a Dostoevskian look that oddly does not come across in the movie itself. Perhaps most interestingly, Villeneuve and Guzikowski appear to be contriving some metaphors for the "war on terror"; some anxieties buried in the American psyche about just what is involved when interrogation is enhanced.
