Death is not an end, but a beginning. Prince Rogers Nelson believed that in his bones. So it was that the night Prince died, a new era, the era of the vault, began. By the time Prince was 40, he had written and recorded more songs than any artist could possibly release in a lifetime. To house all of his unreleased recordings, Prince constructed a vault in the basement of his Paisley Park complex in the suburbs of Minneapolis. Legend has it that as many as 8, songs are stored in the vault.

Records in , complete with artwork at the same time as Chaos and Disorder , but released three years later, shortly before Prince's Arista album release Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. In a fairly positive review, Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it "an unassuming, jazzy little record that's damn near irresistible. Entertainment Weekly ' s Marc Weingarten appreciated the album, stating that it "sounds more committed than a lot of his indie releases"; however, Weingarten noted that Prince fans would enjoy the album more. In a mixed review, Mark Zeltner of PopMatters enjoyed songs "Extraordinary" and "It's About That Walk", but criticized the record's "lack of a cohesive musical theme", also calling the track listing "a series of songs that were forgotten or discarded long ago by their creator.

There was just one problem: Nobody knew the combination to the safe, not even Prince when he was alive. He had reportedly forgotten the code several years before his death and left the vault locked. With no way in, the assistance of experts was required to open the vault following his death in , which is where Dave McOmie, a professional safecracker based in Oregon, came into the picture. He already knew the exact model of Prince's vault - a Mosler American Century - when Prince's estate reached out to him. At six and a half feet tall, several feet wide and 6, pounds, it's not easily cracked into. McOmie turned to a common safecracking technique: microdrilling. A small hole is drilled through the door in a precise location so as to view the combination lock from the inside using a periscope. Based on its configuration, McOmie could then determine the correct code to open the door.
