Getting there used to be, at least for me, amusing for others as my various travel ordeals seem to entertain. Attempting to disaster-proof myself…to assure I arrive…I had originally booked a PM flight from Reno to San Francisco with an almost two hour layover before my flight to Paris. Better there and bored than not being onboard the plane! Well — and I do compliment United for its now excellent communication — due to staffing issues mandatory rest period conflicting due to earlier delays my flight would be delayed until AM…unless a substitute flight crew was obtained. That meant I could risk it and assume a AM departure and if it left early I would be stuck hoping to get on that PM flight or I could check-in for the original boarding time.

So we went to the tasting room where for 9 Euros, I had two generous pourings of a 10 year old semi-sweet Madeira wine and a 15 year old. In ours, suite , we enjoyed our balcony, which I consider a must-have feature when sailing in Antarctica. We also loved the carving station that featured items like fish, a whole pig, turkey and roast beef. And perhaps there will be other Europeans as well. We were glad we were up top observing as they kept getting wiped out. As I previously reported, we will be joining Le Commandant Charcot next week for a 19 day cruise to Greenland and Svalbard. There were only 4 of us on the return trip and as we were driving down, the driver saw two women walking in the street — tourists who waited for a public bus that never came. Throughout the garden were dozens of other beautiful azulejos, in the traditional blue and white color scheme, and sculptures ancient and modern. Most private cabs were not allowed in so we had to take shuttles provided by Ponant out to an area where taxis could pick up passengers. Parliament is near the Cathedral.

While sailing toward South Georgia, we spent our time on Le Lyrial getting in a daily workout in the small gym. Contact Ponant Surf School!
