The first rule of the internet is not to read the comments for any op-ed one posts. Because the cover of anonymity allows people to say awful stuff. Of course, Twitter amply demonstrates that people will say awful things on the internet even when one can be clearly identified. Anyhow, over the past several years, a series of websites have been gathering spots for both aspiring and experienced political scientists to exchange in rumors and opinions about the profession to be clear, anyone can post so it might be economist students seeking to troll or other folks entirely. In the old days of the s, one would never know about the places to which one applied unless one got invited for a job talk, unless a friend got invited, or when one eventually got the rejection letter which often never came at all. The crowdsourcing worked for a while, until folks started attacking the job candidates that were doing well. Then people stopped posting job rumors quite as much and much less reliably.

Polisci rumors

At first thought, the question of whether to participate on PLSI rumors or not seems pretty simple to me. Why would I want to listen to this cohort speculate on job candidates, or my work or anything else? It sets low career goals. It is not an effective source of information. Our field not that big. For questions about jobs, most of us know someone who knows someone at particular department that can give accurate information about a job within ethical limitations. Similarly, if you wanted to know the best journal to place an article it would make more sense to ask mentors, someone in that area, ANYONE other than a bunch of random website visitors and trolls. This seems obvious, but- to me- basing an entire website on rumors means that the content is largely gossip, speculation, and back-stabbing. Sure, we all like to hear a juicy piece of information shared in hushed tones, behind closed doors; however, for the most part gossip is an inherently negative activity. Why participate on a site geared entirely around this activity? We get it.
