Probably the most popular big-inch sled of the era was the Indy powered by a carbureted cc piston port triple. This somewhat unsophisticated 2-stroke made turbine-like power and, in combination with Polaris P clutching, delivered performance way beyond expectations. When Polaris announced its intention to build the same sled with electronic fuel injection, the naysayers were upset, probably because they felt it meant you could no longer make engine modifications to jack horsepower and performance beyond stock. Although electronic fuel injection had begun to show up as an aftermarket add-on for snowmobiles, Polaris became the first snowmobile manufacturer to produce an actual production sled with EFI technology. Fitted to the top of the line Indy performance triple, the fuel system quickly appeared on the popular Indy twin. Today every snowmobile manufacturer offers fuel injection systems. But in Polaris claimed leadership with EFI. Of course, at the end of the decade a Colorado jury would say the Polaris system showed an all-too clear resemblance to a system brought to Polaris for examination in the summer of by Injection Research Specialists. The end result would be a multi-million dollar judgment in favor of Injection Research Specialists. To keep the cc triple cool, Polaris used aluminum extrusions mounted under the runningboard.
