The Gym Leader is Whitney. Trainers who defeat her receive the Plain Badge. The player must navigate their way around the pink-floored Gym by going around the wall of pretty flowers first then entering the middle section. The Trainers in the Gym are hard to avoid and most of them must be battled in order to reach Whitney. Whitney will be located in the middle of the Gym where she can be challenged to earn the Plain Badge.

If you chose the former, watch for their special move Mud-Slap, which deals Ground-type damage and lowers your Pokemon's accuracy. Chikorita will need to call in assistance from another Pokemon like Geodude or Onix, who can be caught in the Dark Cave or traded for in Violet City respectively. Puzzle : The gender ambiguous Bugsy is your next challenge in Azalea Town. Like in Violet City, there is no true gym puzzle - simply beat the trainers to get to the leader.

Strategy: Catch a Geodude or trade for an Onix in order to have Rock-type attacks with which to beat him. Totodile and Cyndaquil will also fair decently, but watch out for Mud-Slap with the latter. Rock-type attacks also work, so if you used Geodude or Onix in the last fight you can make use of them again. Finally, a Mareep or Flaaffy can use Electric-type attacks against Scyther. Gym Leader Whitney has a reputation for being a punishing force with her Normal-type team, specifically Miltank, and a new generation of players may just be discovering this for the first time.
