Commuting, fast group rides, all weathers and big distances when the need arises… Pinnacle reckons the Dolomite 6 can do it all. The heat-treated aluminium alloy tubing is double and triple-butted for optimum strength-to-weight, pinnacle dolomite.

Evans Cycles house brand Pinnacle has earned a reputation for sensible, smartly-specced bikes that offer considerable value for money. When we tested its Dolomite Six in , it impressed us with its cheerful versatility and solid Shimano build. Our one real criticism was of its sub-standard Tektro rim brakes, so the fact that this year's Dolomite 5 gets similar kit along with proper hydraulic discs is very promising. The braking upgrade has meant a few concessions along the way. The full carbon fork is no more, an alloy-steerered one in its place, while the slick crankset has lost out to a less posh, but perfectly serviceable, FSA unit. The weight's gone up a little too by around 0. The frame is a tidily executed alloy affair with minimally disguised welds, partly internal cabling, and a tapered head tube.

Retail giant Evans Cycles is celebrating 10 years of its Pinnacle bike brand with some limited-edition machines. Evans has maintained the outgoing Ultegra-level RS hydraulic shifters, and added custom mudguards and built-in lights, powered by a front hub dynamo. The stays wrap around the long, flapless mudguards, reducing your chances of toe overlap. The bike dynamo hub adds around g, the lights and wiring a little more, but none is rotational mass. The Pinnacle-branded stem, seatpost and saddle are fine, the FSA bar too, although I found the mm stem length and overall reach a little shorter than I normally prefer. The front Alex rim is rebuilt around the Son thru-axle hub dynamo, and whether due to quick-release and thru-axle rigidity differences, my Novatec hub-mounted rear disc rotor rubbed on most climbs while standing. Measuring 24mm externally, the Alex rims spread the Schwalbe Pro One 28mm tyres out to 30mm, adding extra floaty air volume and a generous grip patch. I know the rolling resistance of 28mm tyres is negligible in real terms, but I did notice the resistance caused by the dynamo hub. The fork crown mounted front light is specifically designed for optimum road-cycling vision in the dark, with a focused spot ahead of an even light patch that effectively lights over 10m of country lane darkness. The LTD is well equipped and very practical with all-weather, all-season credentials matched to a refined ride feel and response. It looks great, is fine value and is a perfect fast commuter or winter bike. The products mentioned in this article are selected or reviewed independently by our journalists.

The Dolomite 4 is all about practicality and versatility rather than straight-out speed. As Evans says, it would make a great winter trainer and has commuting covered. However, with its price increase and higher spec for it has become expensive for a winter trainer yet is a little on the sensible side to be the type of summer bike that likes to be ragged around the evening chaingang after work. As a reasonably heavy bike with big, heavy 26c Kenda tyres, it takes a fair dollop of power to get it going. This puts acceleration on the eventual rather than effervescent side of the line, and on more cut-and-thrust group rides whoever was on the Pinnacle was soon at the back of the pack. While the frame tubes are double butted and the fatter, thicker tyres can be run at lower pressure without increasing puncture or pothole-flat risk, the overall ride character is definitely durable rather than delicate. This allows for confident complacency on less than good road surfaces in terms of mechanical survival, but the parts of you that meet the bars and saddle are going to get some serious tenderising if you ride on the rough stuff for too long. The ride position and handling take some getting used to as well. The head angle is only a relatively slack 72 degrees, but the straight-line-prone steering effect is very obvious. That meant it took a while for us to trust the Pinnacle on greasy, leafy corners. The only modern twist to the average height, standard gauge head tube is a slight flare to accommodate internal bearings. The D-to-round chainstays and straight gauge round seatstays continue the simple trend at the back end and with a frame weight of over 1. Commuting credentials are completed with mudguard and rack mounts on the rear and mudguard mounts on the fork tips.

How would the controls work for larger or smaller riders? All rights reserved. In his cycling career Simon has mostly focused on time trialling with a national medal, a few open wins and his club's mile record in his palmares. Comment on any other components good or bad Threaded bottom bracket is a welcome piece of common-sense. Likewise the fitting of a KMC chain with a quick-link rather than a Shimano one. I really like internally routed cables as it makes a frame neater and much easier to clean. One thing that struck me was how quiet a bike it is to ride. Handling is biased towards stability rather than rapier-sharp responsiveness, which suits the bike well. The bar is a 44cm c-t-c on the XL bike but, oddly, feels wider, I think on account of the very tight forward bends, meaning that there's a wider than normal straight section up top. There are only four sizes. All fields are required. The relatively close spread of gears on the speed cassette gives you plenty to play with, while also supplying a big enough gear to make quick progress on rolling roads, too.

A drivetrain and hydraulic discs mean that the Dolomite 5 really stands out as great value.

If youre a flat-backed racer you won't like this much I am afraid. Good to see decent quality tyres at this price point. Internal cable routing that's configured for UK brake set ups and ease of maintenance and an extensively butted frame complete the package for a bike with sleek looks and a smooth ride. To get the right top tube length I ended up riding a bike that felt comically high at the front. Often found on bikes three times the price, the BRs are solid performers and inspire masses of confidence although they do add to the overall weight of this bike. Would you consider buying the bike? A rounded performance and great versatility in a remarkably affordable package Buy if, You want a capable all-rounder for every season. Fast, comfortable and well-specced road bike with a relaxed and assured ride. There's a little more space at the back. Use this box to explain your score Often, fitting headline grabbing components at a killer price results in serious corners being cut elsewhere, but the Dolomite 5 is a really competent bike with some lovely touches. If so, was it a problem?
