Sound Mats support children's revision of the sounds they are learning and are useful to help them when segmenting their sounds within words to write. Children will also be learning a number of High Frequency Words as the sounds are introduced. Some of these sounds will be decodable and introduced alongside the relevant sounds, others are not decodable at all or at least at the point of introduction and are known as Common Exception Words. Common Exception Words are made clear to the children by use of a lock symbol or a bold grapheme. Some cookies are necessary in order to make this website function correctly.
Phonics shed
Phonics Shed is designed to run from the Early Years Foundation Stage to Year 2; but can extend into Key Stage 2 for those children who need further support in phonics. It connects with the existing Spelling Shed scheme to ensure all curriculum objectives are met, while preparing the children for their Phonics Screening assessment using fast-paced progression through all common GPCs. Children are taught to say the sounds that make up a word and then merge the sounds together until they can hear what the word is. Use the online assignment tool to assign decodable ebooks to pupils, so they can access them on their logins to read at home. Assign particular games for pupils to practise specific GPCs after the lesson. There are a range of games to choose from. For each GPC we have essentially three lesson plans: a daily phonics session, a consolidation plan and an intervention plan. The intervention plans are short 10 minutes sessions, needing minimal resources. They are designed for or small groups of children, who need extra focussed input on a particular GPC. The structure of every intervention lesson stays the same for consistency, making them fast paced and easy to deliver.

The scheme enables children to become fluent readers and writers by providing strategies to decode words by teaching links between letters and the sounds they can make; this is called Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondence GPC. Phonics Shed uses the blending and segmenting approach to teach children to decode words. The scheme is designed to run from the Early Years Foundation Stage Nursery onwards to Year 2 P3 but can extend up to the end of Primary school for those children who need further support in phonics. It connects with the existing Spelling Shed scheme to ensure all relevant curriculum objectives are met, while preparing the children for their Phonics Screening assessment using fast-paced progression through all common GPCs. The planning for the scheme can be used for whole class or smaller differentiated groups depending on the setting's preference. Children will be taught to read and spell a wide variety of words in a short space of time. The initial stages of the programme not only introduce decodable CVC words but encourage children to attempt to blend and segment longer words. As the children work through the scheme, they also gain access to decodable alien words. The Phonics Shed alien words match the criteria given for those used in the Phonics Screening assessment resources.

Each storybook introduces a new character and its associated grapheme phoneme correspondence GPC allowing children to develop in their phonics attainment as they get to know the Phonics Shed characters and progress through the series. Our read-aloud teaching book series comprises stories which are available to purchase as hard copies and also available digitally via our websites to display on interactive whiteboards or via screen-share for remote teaching. In these stories, many familiar characters appear but the words are strictly limited to those that are either decodable by the current stage of learning or are explicitly teachable as partially-decodable common exception words.
