En route to Las Vegas lies a s style Diner in the middle of the blazing hot Mojave desert. Sound random?
Our Southern California road trip was about to continue. Our route followed the legendary Route 66 for a while which ends in California. Just to feel nostalgic, we got off the freeway and drove along Route 66 for a while. Someday it would be cool to drive the whole stretch across America. Barstow is about half way from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, so many stop there on their drive. Right next to Barstow is Calico Ghost Town which we skipped this time, since it was already closed by 5 pm.

He was the star in our relationship, our business and everything that we had built. Champ Gabler, the year-old businessman who was considered a pillar in the Barstow area for nearly 40 years, died Sept. Gabler was hospitalized after he became short of breath and developed blood clots. He was also diagnosed with non-terminal blood cancer. Part of that support team includes the Gablers' son, Casey, an architect who lives in the Los Angeles area. Our family lived, loved and laughed together constantly. There are no words to describe the loss we are feeling. He truly was a force of nature. Emily Gabler said she was the "luckiest girl in the world" to have Champ Gabler as her father. A park located on the property includes an eating area, grass ponds, trees, and large statues of dinosaurs and an ape. The diner also sports posters of Hollywood films that Peggy Gabler acted in, including the horror film "Alligator" from in which she played a reporter and "One From the Heart," directed by Francis Ford Coppola, in which she played a casino guest. Many of our customers are eating their meals outside in our park area. In May, Champ Gabler explained how the government shutdown of businesses resuled in a lack of out-of-state tourism, and the decrease in Las Vegas-bound travelers coming to the diner.

We had passed this place on the way to Las Vegas from LA and I knew for sure that we were going to have to check it out on the way back! You can't miss the roadside signs that will direct you to it as Sprawling over many rooms that look like additions and are decorated with all kinds of great 's nostalgia, we found a table near the back where there's a neat little park filled with ducks and turtles. All the food was really tasty and the portions were really big. My only complaint was that we didn't see our server for quite a while after our food arrived and I really could've used a refill on the pop. After we ate we explored the rooms and the gift shop and even went outside to see the animals, but there was a windstorm outside that cut our visit short. Definitely check out this place if you find yourself in the desert - and come hungry because there's lots to eat!

As most travelers realize, three essential items are needed for an adventure: a mode of transportation, fuel for that mode of transportation, and fuel for the travelers themselves. Alternatively, pull your EV into one of those plug-in thingies, take a long lunch and a nap, and eventually, you are back on the road again. But the inner fuel for the travelers is one of the best parts of getting from point A to point B. My personal history with the iconic restaurant goes back decades.
