As with the Core Rulebook Pocket Edition review, this review is therefore two reviews — one addressing the Pocket Edition in comparison to the standard Bestiary , and one addressing the Bestiary itself. The book still looks great. A traditional hardcover Bestiary is about 8. Actually looking those things up mid-adventure really bogs the game down. How good is it as an RPG book? The Bestiary contains about pages of monster entries, a few pages of explanation of how to read an entry, and then various appendices and indices. There are lists of monsters alphabetically, by challenge rating, and by type, although the list by CR is a list, not an index — you can get the name off of the list, then have to go the alphabetical index to get the page number. The typical entry is a single page, including a full stat block and excellent art, with whatever space is left dedicated to a narrative description. There are also a significant number of monsters with two-page spreads, most often because a variety of iterations of the monster are presented such four ages of each kind of dragon or six sizes for each kind of elemental. In some cases related monsters share a page with only one piece of art , such as the dire rat and rat swarm.
In a way this could be a detriment, as the wealth of information could easily overwhelm new GMs. You play as Pathfinders, explorers who search the far reaches of the world Golarion for treasure, intrigue, and mystery.

The book still looks great. A traditional hardcover Pathfinder Core Rulebook is about 8. The pocket edition might be a little rough on someone who is visually impaired. The pocket edition is also not going to lay flat on the table not great if you are trying to read character information out of the book and record it on a sheet. So you are giving up some amount of usability and readability for that lower price point and higher portability. Pathfinder is a classic sword-and-sorcery, high fantasy roleplaying game.

The new or the old? Both editions operate on the D20 dice system, using the full span of dice from d4s, d6s, d8s, d10s, d12s, d20s, and ds. Both editions are set in a fantasy world, and both utilize the classic RPG styles of class, race, and background builds. Paizo Publishing, Inc. It's important to note that the pocket editions of the "Core Rulebook and Bestiary" contain the same number of pages, the same full-color fantasy art and all of the same content page per page as the bigger hardcovers. The pocket version is a goblin-sized 6.
