The long-term survival of ACC patients is substantially superior to that of pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients. As there are no significant patient series about ACCs, our understanding of this illness is mainly based on case reports and limited patient series.
Pancreatic acini
Acinar cell carcinoma of the pancreas , also acinar cell carcinoma , is a rare malignant exocrine tumour of the pancreas. It typically has a guarded prognosis. The disease is more common in men than women and the average age at diagnosis is about ACC is associated with increased serum lipase and manifests in the classic presentation known as the Schmid triad subcutaneous fat necrosis , polyarthritis, eosinophilia. ACC are typically large, up to 10 cm, and soft compared to pancreatic adenocarcinoma, lacking its dense stroma. They can arise in any part of the pancreas. Histomorphologically, the tumour resembles the cells of the pancreatic acini and, typically, have moderate granular cytoplasm that stain with both PAS and PASD. Light microscopy of an acinar cell carcinoma biopsy typically shows granular appearance. ACC can be treated with a Whipple procedure or depending on the location within the pancreas with left partial resection of pancreas. Contents move to sidebar hide.

Human pancreatic exocrine cells were cultured in 3D suspension and formed pancreatospheres composed of acinar-derived and duct-like cells. We investigated, up to 6 days, the fate of human pancreatic acinar cells using fluorescein-conjugated Ulex Europaeus Agglutinin 1 lectin, a previously published acinar-specific non-genetic lineage tracing strategy. These findings with human cells underscore the remarkable plasticity of pancreatic exocrine acinar cells, previously described in rodents, and could find applications in the field of regenerative medicine.

The acinar cell of the exocrine pancreas has the greatest rate of protein synthesis of any mammalian organ. The acinar cell has a highly developed endoplasmic reticulum ER system combined with mechanisms to modify and transport newly synthesized proteins through the secretory pathway Figure 6 [ 2 , 26 ]. In addition to its functions in performing protein synthesis and processing, the ER is the major storage site for intracellular calcium, which, when released into the cytoplasm, is the mediator of regulated secretion of stored digestive enzymes into the pancreatic ductal system [ 27 ]. Electron micrograph of the pancreatic acinar cell. This electron micrograph shows the key cellular structures involved in synthesis, processing and storage of digestive enzymes.
Pancreatic acini
Pancreatic islets, also called the islets of Langerhans, are regions of the pancreas that contain its hormone-producing endocrine cells. The pancreas serves two functions, endocrine and exocrine. The exocrine function of the pancreas is involved in digestion, and these associated structures are known as the pancreatic acini.

For example, galactosyltransferase is restricted to the two or three trans -most Golgi cisternae We investigated the co-expression, at protein level, of GP2, CD, PDX1 and SOX9 in the pancreatospheres to further ascertain acinar dedifferentiation and acquisition of an embryonic state. The pancreas serves digestive and endocrine functions, and it is composed of two types of tissue: islets of Langerhans and acini. The pancreas is a glandular organ in the digestive system and endocrine system of vertebrates. It is both an endocrine gland that produces several important hormones—including insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, and pancreatic polypeptide—as well as a digestive organ that secretes pancreatic juice that contain digestive enzymes to assist the absorption of nutrients and digestion in the small intestine.
Front Med Lausanne ; 2 Liu, J. For example, proteomic assessment of acinar ER proteins following ethanol feeding shows a shift towards increased oxidation, which suggests the likelihood of aberrant disulfide bonds — leading to protein misfolding and ER stress 7,8. Also known as a leader sequence, the signal sequence allows nascent proteins to cross the endoplasmic reticulum ER membrane by traversing the translocon, a large multi-protein channel 1. These actions serve to increase the ER folding capacity and secretory output to clear accumulated proteins and are collectively referred to as the adaptive UPR. Mayo Clin Proc.
