As we approached the first group of murals, the loyalty to the Crown was obvious. Somehow before we arrived at this stop, I had always thought the murals were meant primarily to memorialize and tell the story of the rebels who wanted Northern Ireland to join its neighbor to the south.

Is anyone familiar with these tours, or have opinions to recommend for or against this one, as compared to other "Black Cab" style tours to cover Troubles sites and issues? So much in responding to queries such as this depends on one's own one-time experience. I have only had one relevant experience. It was with Black Cab, in , and it was fascinating. We didn't actually pay for the tour; rather, we were approached by a cabbie at the Belfast train station and he gave us a ride to the Belfast airport where we would be picking up our rental car. He gave us an "unofficial" Black Cab tour as well as his business card for the "official" tour to pass along to others , taking the back roads to the airport since we were not in a hurry. It was fascinating. Seeing the peace wall was quite moving, and seeing the gates that they lower at night so that "both sides feel safe" was unexpected. He stopped and pointed out a lot of interesting facts and sights along the way. And when he needed to gas up, he pulled in through the open gates to the North and gassed up there.

The mural depicting Bobby Sands, a Catholic who died from a hunger strike, is one of the most famous. Although the situation is not fully resolved in Northern Ireland, there is a tenuous peace, as symbolized by the Peace Wall.

This was an amazing day — students continued to learn more about The Troubles , adding to developing layers of understanding, as we visited the Belfast political murals in several sectarian neighborhoods. We studied these areas of sectarian divide and the murals in class last semester spring , but actually seeing them, firsthand and in situ, was powerful, disturbing and absolutely essential to really being able to begin to grok all of this complex history — on any level. They picked us up at our Guest House and engaged students, from the start, with their generosity of spirit and, at turns, humor and somber storytelling about all sides of The Troubles. Next, we drove along the gorgeous North Antrim coast. Seeing The Dark Hedges from The Game of Thrones was a huge hit and lots of fun — it is a gorgeous, fabulously creepy place and we could all imagine ourselves in that famous fog and chiaroscuro moonlight scene!
