A couple of months ago I gave My Outback 2,5 limited to my son in Highschool and everything was working good. Figured I throw a cam sensor at it and got an NTK from Rock auto and still same issues but getting p or p along with ecm codes and CEL with Cruise and brake flashing. Clear codes and it starts and runs fine the rest of the day.

Some thoughts, 1 we live in a very dry place , so no grounding issues or corrosion on any electrical parts 2 battery is less than 1 year old, no charging issues 3 i have pulled and both cleaned Cam-shaft sensors of normal Gray residue you get at K miles of engine wear that accumulates on this magnetic sensor 3 electrical failure of both sensors at the same time seems unlikely 4 the one time i heard it on start-up, there was also a rather disturbing sound from engine like a starter grinding. Hoping like heck this rattle wasn't the timing chain My concern, possibly stretched timing chain or malfunctioning cam phasers.

I will check it out and see what i can find. The problem has returned only now the car will stall at idle and is hard to start. I read up a bit more about the issue and saw some posts from people claiming that there is a shim kit that may be necessary, spacing the sensor anywhere from 0. Leaky seal? Unfortunately a tear down is the only way to be sure. If it is a problem with the camshaft wouldn't the issue persist regardless of whether the sensor was replaced?
