Folk dancers performed on wooden platforms along the cobblestone street. The men, dressed in white, wore cowboy hats and red bandanas around their necks. People sat at thatched-roof pubs with swings around the bar. Tables of outdoor eateries were set under the umbrella of massive ceiba trees. That evening and the rest of our romantic getaway in Playa del Carmen left me awestruck.

Shoppers, remodelers and weekend project warriors would trek as far as from Tulum to the Cancun store. Now everyone can take advantage of the new location in Playa Del Carmen. People would go all the way to Cancun to the home Depot there for many reasons such as one stop shopping, numerous products available, having things available and in stock, ability to see what is available and wander the store, and clear prices for things. Traditionally in Mexico, shopping for construction materials means going to a specialty store. So if you are redoing a bathroom, you might need to go to a tile store, a lighting store, a bathroom fixture store and in another store find caulk, paint and other supplies. This might make a project take much longer because of the time it takes for sourcing materials. When you do move to another country you can find it hard to get to know local products and usually learning the name of construction materials in Spanish is far down on your list of words to learn. So going to a local shop and asking for things that are behind a counter or in a store room can be tedious let alone a lesson in the metric system. Prices on some products can be higher over local specialty stores, but it is hard to compare sometimes because the quality of the product and price cannot be clearly compared because they sell different brands. The City of Merida has had a Home Depot for several years now. Residents there find it very convenient for buying products but do notice how it is usually a little more expensive for some things then the local stores. Customers do love the knowledgeable staff and service at local specialty stores. The good thing about these specialty stores is the ability to buy small amounts of things and the knowledgeable staff. For example if you need 23 screws, you can buy just that many and not a bag of and the people would normally know what is the best screw for your project and be able to explain each of their products in detail. Some of this service and knowledge gets lost in large store as well as the customer experience.
Playacar the area as a neighborhood is fantastic!

The beaches, the water, the amenities, and the nightlife are just a few of the things that make Playa del Carmen a top Mexican Caribbean destination. Below is our guide to making the best of your visit including many of the top things to do in Playa del Carmen. We hope you enjoy! Hundreds of years ago, Playa del Carmen was an important Mayan stop along the pilgrimage route toward the nearby island of Cozumel, considered a sacred place at the time. Over the years, Playa, as it is commonly known, became a vital city of commerce and trade. Due to the frequency of pilgrims, trade seekers, pirates and European explorers, the city flourished. Today, travelers and locals visit the city for relaxation, nature, culture and a less expensive but no less beautiful travel destination than Cancun. Playa is said to be one of the fastest-growing cities in Latin America and is the jumping off point for the scuba and snorkeling destination of Cozumel.

Playa Del Carmen does have a bus system but rarely will you need to use. This it because it usually just takes people back home to neighborhoods and there are not tourist destinations or areas of interest to see outside of the downtown of Playa. Here is a small guide for knowing where it goes and how to use it. If you are a tourist or living here you might only find it useful to go to one of the shopping malls. You might take the bus because if you are one or two people the busses can take you there for just pesos each compared to pesos in a taxi. See taxi guide with price chart.

I have relocated here in playa Del Carmen, from Philadelphia Pennsylvania. A road sign with an E and a red line through it means no parking or no Estacionamiento. I am going here every time I want ceviche. Have been for about 5 years. Slide 1 of 5. They pay special attention to hygiene. Check this place out if you're in the area! Such a cool museum! Beautiful authentic Maya textiles and handicraft made locally. It has a good mix of expats, locals and tourists with walking access to the beach and 5th Avenue. Delicious food, great service, good music at a reasonable volume.

This famous pedestrian-only, cobblestone avenue is lined with restaurants, galleries, dive shops, artisan and boutique stores, pubs and cafes. I admit I went there just because of the but then I realized there are some other things there, including a Starbucks and a Samsonite shop. Adults only hotels. It is illegal to drink and drive, to not wear your seat belt and to talk on your cellphone while driving. This is your starting point but it will make stops wherever you need to go along the highway. Definitely better than starbucks. Food is wonderful. The prices where very good and some were better than the large shopping clubs. Nice open area, lots of shops to choose from and area for guest to sit down and kick back while shopping. Heck Mexico. We recently visited Axiote and I was thoroughly impressed with the overall experience. Latest articles. Sign up.
