The story of No Man's Sky so far, explained. No Man's Sky sees players travel through space and time as they research interstellar systems and seek out answers for themselves. At the start of the game, players follow a series of instructions from a mysterious traveler that came before them. Like the player's character, the traveler has no idea how they came to be in their current situation and was forced to figure out how to survive for themselves. However, the game's starting quests don't follow the traditional questline that a normal 'open-world' game does. So, this has left players wondering if there is, in fact, a story to No Man's Sky at all. If you want to find out the answer to this burning question, you can check out our full explanation below. Awakenings is the game's very first story mission and also acts as an introduction to the game's mechanics for new players. The mission tasks the player with finding and repairing what appears to be their starship, then tracking a mysterious signal throughout the galaxy. They should mine 75 Ferrite Dust as soon as possible to repair the Scanner , as they will spawn with low Hazard Protection and finding Sodium without a functioning Scanner can be difficult. Also, the player should find a cave to recharge their Hazard Protection and mine some Cobalt to make Ion Batteries for recharging protection outside of the cave. It is strongly advised that the player does not receive help from other players during this opening mission; as being given items needed will skip tutorials and fail to make log entries. Worst of all, it will stop the player from receiving certain blueprints, such as the Base Computer module or Hermetic Seal , which cannot be found elsewhere in the game.

No Man's Sky is a game about exploration and players finding their own way across the universe. However, this will tend to leave some players confused about how to start certain quests. The newest update for No Man's Sky added in a new race of Machine-like aliens along with a whole quest line for players to follow. It will not show players exactly where to go, instead leaving most to figure out how to trigger the first quest "Those Who Returned. Players must first have finished "The Purge," the final quest on the Artemis main storyline. This will dedicate a huge chunk of time for players, so a new save is not recommended for those wanting to jump into the new content right away. The game will guide players where they will need to go for each step of the quest and is crucial for getting upgrades to help survive the vast star systems that will need to be explored. The second step will involve players creating a planetary settlement and completing "A Trace of Metal" quest, which will involve No Man's Sky players creating their own sentinel companion. This quest also has a few requirements to trigger. Players must not have any outstanding tasks to do for their settlement; in "The Settlers" mission log, it should say free to explore.

While players are free to explore the galaxy at their leisure and to their heart's content, the ultimate goal of the single-player mode is to reach the elusive center and the main story ending of No Man's Sky. Individually, scattered through however many dozens of hours as you more or less randomly bump into abandoned buildings, the individual lines make no darn sense at all.
