Los Angeles-based artist Nick Runge uses the watercolor technique to make portraits of people and skeletons in a unique style, which includes elements of abstraction and hints of realism. The faces painted by Nick are modelled on simple, decisive but at the same time detailed strokes, which convey the mood of the characters with great credibility, without ever getting too close to realism itself. The soft colours and expressive poses add a naturalistic touch to the portraits, even when the subject is a skeleton wearing a jacket. Born in , artist Nick Runge grew up in Colorado. Coming from a creative family of professional artists, he has always been interested in art and the world of creativity. After working as a full-time illustrator from he decided to devote himself to the technique of watercolor. Los Angeles-based artist Nick Runge paints watercolor portraits of people and human skeletons in a unique style that blends elements of abstraction with hints of realism. Soft edges of layered shapes and blended flesh and bone tones present all the visual information required to see features, without crossing into the realm of photorealism. I like to guide the watercolor but let it also do its own thing, to be more abstract. Raised in Colorado by now-retired professional artist parents a college art professor and a graphic designer , Runge says that he did not study art formally but that he did benefit from having both of their perspectives. After working as an illustrator for 11 years, he found his voice in through experimentation.
