He finds a baseball bat, not explicitly his old one, wraps it in barbed wire like his old bat called Lucille and brandishes it. Instead, he has to live with his crimes. Negan reflects on his reprieve, unwraps the barbed wire and burns the wooden bat. This act thus marks him turning his back on both his former wife and his leader status and the violence associated with it. Follow this, the last time we see Lucille featured is when Carl takes a detour to leave provisions for Negan.

The episode is divided into the present, the past, and the past pre-apocalypse. Negan spends a lonely evening being tormented by visions of himself as the leader of the Saviors and, the next morning, he returns to the field where Rick Andrew Lincoln slit his throat in the Season 8 finale. After beating a man so badly he had to be hospitalized, he loses his job as a high school gym teacher and counts on Lucille his wife, not the bat to pay the bills. Neither of them is happy. But once she delivers the news that she has cancer, Negan starts to put some effort into their relationship. They laugh and smile and are very much in love.

Once the ultimate villain, he has slowly evolved from the character that fans love to hate, to one that they hate to love. Season 10 even suggested that the leather-clad villain may be well on his way to redemption. They are an established married couple living in Virginia at the start of the comic.
