Aura is an enchantment type that has the text " enchant [ object or player ]", generally with restrictions on what object can be enchanted, especially its type. Auras are unique among evergreen permanents as being the only type that requires a target to cast and resolve like instants and sorceries do , shared only with the unusual mechanic Mutate. Aura mechanics have been in the game from the start, but were formerly known as " local enchantments " or "enchant [type]" cards. The name was introduced in Ninth Edition. Auras have many uses on many types, bestowing continuous effects , setting up triggers , or bringing their own activated abilities. Some Auras, like Pacifism , can be considered removal spells in disguise. Other Auras enhance the creature they're enchanting. Putting an Aura on a permanent, especially a creature, opens the player up to a 1-for-2 exchange. One removal spell could destroy two cards: the creature and, indirectly, the Aura on it. A bounce spell can also put the Aura into the graveyard, making it "fall off" [5] , costing both the Aura spell and the mana spent on both cards. This makes the use of Auras a significant risk when used as an aggressive card. Many of these risks also apply when using Auras as removal: the creature is left on the battlefield, with some abilities still active, ripe for sacrificing, or for other costs like crewing Vehicles. White and Blue are the colors most inclined to use Auras as removal effects. MTG Wiki Explore.

This includes auras with other subtypes like Cartouches, Curses , and Runes , as well as auras that enchant lands, players, planeswalkers , and so on. If I try to enchant my creature and it gets killed in response, the aura fizzles and goes straight to the graveyard. Even successfully sticking an aura opens you up to two-for-one blow-outs when someone eventually deals with the enchanted permanent. The first two white auras are cheap Oblivion Ring effects that require you to enchant a specific type of land.
These commanders give you a clear roadmap on what to build your deck around, and are usually, but not always, in a good color combination for the type of card they focus on. While it might initially seem like commanders all focused on a specific subtype might be very similar to one another, there is actually a decent variety in how these legendary creatures and planeswalkers interact with auras. With any Commander deck, what you put in the 99 also plays a big role, so a commander near the bottom of this list could be more powerful than one at the top if it just has a better build. I would encourage you to take a look at each creature on this list and decide which is most appealing to you and your specific playstyle, instead of assuming that the one at the top will automatically be the best for you personally. Aura commanders are legendary creatures, or planeswalkers that are allowed to be commanders, that focus on supporting auras. Auras are enchantments that enchant specific permanents or players as opposed to just having a static effect. Some of these commanders also just focus on enchantments as a whole as opposed to specifically auras, but still work well for an aura deck. Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh is a fun commander to build a Voltron deck around. It has a lot of great keywords and is very easy to cast, so as long as you have enough auras and equipment to buff it up, they can be a very powerful attacker.

Curse of Vitality Illustration by Kieran Yanner. Is the person sitting across from you in Magic an enemy? You attack them with creatures. You can have your burn spells go to their face. You can do other things that combo and control them out of their game. But does the idea of cursing them with a permanent cross a line? In a multiplayer game like Commander , does the feel bad of a curse feel even worse for the victim? And is targeting only one person like that even useful, strategically or politically? Each visit to Innistrad increases the number of curses since the idea is on point for horror themes. Especially around Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor , who may be worth playing for its name alone.
