The distant mountains and golden dragons provide a wonderful backdrop, one which the blood stands out perfectly against. Kove is a modern stage, only appearing so far in Mortal Kombat X , but it has left quite an impression. The setting is a dock in Outworld, a port of call for travelers and a place of business, but the dark waters hide a boatload of dread and even more blood. There are many items that can be interacted with, but the dead bodies shooting up from the water are the best weapons, and players can use the stage fatality to send their foes to a watery grave with death by a giant-tentacled sea monster. Having a name like The Evil Tower is a solid indicator that this stage is elevated and dangerous, but the real immediate clue — and reason most remember this particular level — is the fast-moving clouds out the giant window.
Later, there would be bodies hanging in the background — those Shao Kahn wished to see punished — and statues for intimidating those about to be murdered.
Mortal Kombat 1 has a robust cast of characters, engaging gameplay, and many modes to keep you busy as you try climbing the ranked leaderboards or unlocking the best-looking gear for your favorite characters. While the gruesomeness and systems deserve praise, so do the visuals and stages, especially considering how varied and beautiful they are. There are 19 stages total in Mortal Kombat 1, all offering a unique flair that helps keep things feeling fresh no matter how much you play. From snowy battlefields to gorgeous gardens to grotesque pits of flesh, there is something for everyone, making this one of the most varied stage selections in the genre. While The Gateway is a fascinating stage from a lore perspective, it lacks the visual flair the majority of the other arenas have, making it take the last spot on our list.
