The Mortal Kombat 1 review embargo broke this morning, with early mortal kombat 1 review embargo beginning tomorrow 3 AM AEST for Australians — and so far, it looks like the next installment in the iconic fighter franchise has had an almost clean sweep of very positive reviews. It'll be a fun story, cool fatalities, probably pretty solid netcode, everything that MK was before.

It Has Begun In the aftermath of Kang's victory, the former Shaolin monk found himself bestowed with the power of time, affording him the opportunity to restart history and reshape the realms of the universe, in an effort to ensure a timeline that dials back on the violence, chaos, and war that had plagued previous existence. The new Time God has done a fine job, creating an admittedly imperfect, but mostly balanced existence for all. Still, Man is made to war. And Liu Kang will be reminded of this soon enough. Immediately, Mortal Kombat 1 impresses with its presentation, kicking off with a gorgeous intro sequence and a stunning title screen and carrying that visual splendour across the entire game. Character models and their costume design is fantastic, with even the less-spotlit kombatants, such as Li Mei and Reiko, having some fantastic detail, while demoness Ashrah, sporting majestic wings and bedecked in white and gold, has one of my favourite designs in Mortal Kombat history. It's humbling to remember those MK9 and Injustice models at this point, as MK strives closer and closer toward realism.

Many outlets have thus far only produced reviews-in-progress due to a hour turnaround following delivery of review code. Most, rightly, decided that trying to cap off an entire Story Campaign, training, settings and tutorials, online multiplayer and live service elements to coverage on a deadline that tight would be ill-advised. So far, criticism for aspects of Mortal Kombat 1 have mainly been levelled at the Test Your Might sequences and approach to unlocking characters and Fatalities through the grind-intensive Invasions and levelling. Mortal Kombat 1 sits at a comfortable 85 on Metacritic and 86 on OpenCritic , although these appear to be made up of mostly console and PC reviews only thus far, and will likely change as reviews for Nintendo Switch and more finalised review scores come through as critics get more time to experience the title in its entirety. Press Start gave the game a 9. A strong and varied roster is bolstered by an ingenious Kameo system that offers up a great degree of player flexibility unlike anything else. NetherRealm, like the characters in its ultraviolent universe, is staring right into the face of a brave new world and locking eyes with the future. Keeping those eyes in its head, though, may remain a challenge. Thoroughly essential for die-hards, lapsed fans and newkomers.

For more than 30 years, Mortal Kombat has been ripping spines and severing heads, and the latest, Mortal Kombat 1, represents perhaps the most dramatic gameplay shift the series has ever seen. For starters, it returns the meter management to just one meter that governs enhanced special moves, breakers, and now jump cancels out of uppercuts; fatal blows are still around, but are no longer invincible on start up; krushing blows are gone completely; character variations are gone; wake up attacks and wake up rolls are gone; every character is now able to do much more damage without even spending any meter thanks in part to a new air combo system; and thank the Lord, blocked crouching jabs are now punishable with crouching jabs of your own, making them much less spammable than before. These are all good, smart changes that make the action in MK1 feel fresh, yet familiar, while addressing some of the pain points that the fighting game community had developed with MK
