A molly or molly bolt often misspelled moly [1] is a type of screw fastener that fastens objects to plaster or gypsum board hollow walls by providing an anchor to be lodged inside a hole and expanded once in position. Larger sizes permit reasonably heavy objects, such as shelving, flatscreen-TV mounts or central-heating radiators, to be attached to drywall in locations where there is no stud behind the drywall. For heavy objects, multiple molly bolts may be required. The name Molly was formerly trademarked [2] but is now often used in generic reference. Other names used for this same general type of fastener include hollow-wall anchor and hollow-door anchor , sometimes with design variations but always with the same design theme of expansion via deformation as the screw is tightened.

Plaster walls and hollow-core doors are no picnic to work on either. These surfaces separate space, not support weight. But, fortunately, there is an anchor for just about any hanging job you can think of. Here are the best fasteners for common household hang-ups. Available in several varieties, these work well for light less than 10 pounds and medium loads 10 pounds to 25 pounds. How to use them: Drill a hole that allows a snug fit for the sleeve. You should need to tap it home with a hammer until the anchor flange seats against the surface. Fasten by driving a screw into the sleeve. Depending on size, sleeves will take 4, 6 or 8 screws. Best for: Heavy picture frames, bulletin boards, smoke alarms, doorbell chimes, lightweight shelving, wall-mounted light fixtures, and wall-mounted mirrors on plaster walls.
