Misato and kaji
Kaji is first presented in Episode 8. Misato is annoyed to see him as Asuka's guardian, as their last entanglement, years ago in college, ended less than amicably. Kaji however remains friendly and continuously teases her, and her new charge Shinji, about it. Kaji works as a "Special Investigator" at Nerv, arousing Misato's suspicions. He is also friends with Ritsuko, another friend of Misato she first met in college, and flirts with her, causing Misato to feel jealous. They slowly become closer again, as Kaji increasingly flirts with her and says he still loves her. Asuka, now under Misato's care, feels resentful of both of them, as she has a teenage crush on him. This is also a motivation for her getting closer to Shinji. Kaji and Misato go out with Ritsuko to attend a friend's wedding. Misato gets drunk and reminisces on feeling alone. Carrying her home, Misato has a breakdown, and admits the reason she broke up with him was because she kept seeing her father, who gave his life to save her, in Kaji himself, also the reason she felt initially drawn to him. She starts berating herself, which Kaji stops by kissing her. After this point, Kaji and Misato rekindle their relationship and start to go out again. He also becomes a father figure and mentor to Shinji, together with Misato as his guardian and mother figure. However, he is unable to escape his role in the plot's conspiracies, and is eventually assasinated by a Seele agent in Episode 21, which leaves Misato in great distress.
How did they get there, and what is their purpose?
I also liked the coupling of Misato and Kaji, who remain my two favorite characters from the series. The early episodes with Kaji largely portray him as smug and a womanizer. And early on, Misato seems completely in control in any and every situation. However, as the series progresses, the two depictions change — Kaji is more heroic and loving and Misato is more lost and unsure. The truth is, neither character is what they seem at first. But in terms of the world depicted in the show, Kaji knows from the beginning who Misato really is. He knows her struggles, her past, and her insecurities.
The series is set fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm known as Second Impact and is mostly set in the futuristic, fortified city of Tokyo The series' protagonist is Shinji Ikari , a teenage boy who is recruited by his father Gendo into the special military organization Nerv to pilot a gigantic, bio-mechanical mecha named Evangelion into combat with beings called Angels. In the course of the episode, the agent Ryoji Kaji conducts investigations into an institute called Marduk and gathers together with his Nerv colleagues Ritsuko Akagi and Misato Katsuragi for a party. After the party, Misato, Ryoji's ex-girlfriend, confesses to him the real reason why she left him years before. Meanwhile, Shinji meets his father to visit the grave of his mother, Yui , and kisses fellow pilot Asuka Langley Soryu. According to screenwriter Satsukawa, "Those women longed for the touch of others' lips, and thus invited their kisses" is the Neon Genesis Evangelion episode in which his personality is most reflected. During the episode, entirely focused on the relationships of the characters and devoid of action scenes, use is made of religious symbolism and music outside the original soundtrack of the series, including Johann Sebastian Bach 's " Suite for Cello Solo No. Some reviewers criticized the script, the interpretation of Kotono Mitsuishi , Misato's voice actress, the music and Asuka's behavior. Other reviewers appreciated the kiss between Shinji and Asuka and the one between Misato and Kaji, praising the religious symbolism and the focus on the relationships between the protagonists.

He is employed by NERV as a special inspector. Kaji appears to be a triple agent, working as a special inspector for NERV, while secretly investigating the organization for the Japanese Ministry of the Interior, and at times seemingly acting as a cat's-paw both for and against Gendo Ikari and SEELE. In addition, he seems to maintain personal motivations beyond loyalty to any organization, and speaks frequently of his desire to "find the truth. Kaji and Misato Katsuragi were lovers during college, but they had long since broken up by the start of the series and do not see each other again until she flies out to the UN fleet ferrying Unit and Asuka Langley Sohryu to Japan. Most of the time, Kaji is very easygoing and jovial, always remaining cool and composed and maintaining his detached sense of humor even during times of crisis. He also flirts unabashedly with his female peers and coworkers, which further draws Misato's ire. Despite his irresponsible public persona, Kaji demonstrates a great level of personal responsibility and worldly wisdom in his personal interactions.
