Considering just how much Dabi was neglected by his father, there is at least some reasoning as to why he adopted such a dark mindset, and while he does commit some heinous acts as a villain , the fans do get at least a believable reason as to why. There are some signs that Dabi might have started to let go of his obsession with vengeance throughout the course of the story, but he, unfortunately, can't shake off the trauma he faced as a child. In a similar vein to Dabi, Toga has a reason for why she became such a violent and bloodthirsty individual , and while it doesn't excuse what she's done, it does help to give an insight as to why someone would become this twisted. Despite her innocent high-school student design, Toga is a psychotic killer who enjoys nothing more than wiping out anyone who gets in her way. Her Quirk, Transform, allows her to become a body double of someone else after she has drank some of their own blood, and she is even able to use their Quirk later in the story. It was eventually revealed that Toga was punished for her blood-reliant Quirk as a child, and while she eventually tried to be "normal", it soon became clear that she was being made into an outcast by not just society, but even by her own parents too. She therefore decided to take on the mantra of killing everything she despises, especially those who don't want to form a friendship with her.

It is unsurprising that mangaka Kohei Horikoshi is able to increase the fear factor on these characters even further given how much prowess he has shown for drawing panels straight out of a horror manga in the past, but now he is taking these frightening panels a step further by representing the terror caused by this villains metaphorically. The manga represents this metaphorically in a panel of a child version of Ochako confronting a twisted and monstrous form of Himiko holding a knife over the girl's head. Himiko is already horrifying enough at this point in the fight, covered in blood and baring her fangs for all to see, but this imaginary version makes her much more terrifying, with her face pulled back in a rictus grin and her muscles exposed and stretching her form unnaturally. It inspires a terror that a literal shot of the villain couldn't, which is what makes this panel so powerful. My Hero Academia isn't the first Shonen Jump series to have used this technique to make its villains more intimidating. The Elusive Samurai by Yusei Matsui has also done this, using visual metaphors to turn the real historical figure of Ashikaga Takauji into one of Shonen Jump 's most disturbing villains.

In a series such as My Hero Academia where there will always be heroes to fight and repel villains and other forces of evil, it is only inevitable that there is going to be plenty of suspense and tension, in order to properly sell the threat that the antagonists pose. However, instead of the generic superheroes powering up to overcome the bad guys, this isn't always the case, with there often being a real sense and feeling of dread that something might go wrong and the good guys may well lose badly. While the majority of such moments in My Hero Academia center around the likes of Tomura Shigaraki and Kai Chisaki, or Overhaul, as their general demeanor and personalities are generally creepy and unhinged, the moments when they interact or threaten our heroes' safety are arguably when they are at their scariest and most despicable. The Hero Killer Stain was one of the most interesting villainous characters in My Hero Academia , especially outside of the main circle within the League of Villains. Although he had already been introduced by the time that he was confronted by Tenya Iida, the subsequent faceoff is what really showcased him and why he was so feared.
