Sitting atop the Mercedes-Benz SUV lineup is the posh and powerful GLS-class, which earns its place alongside other high-end Benzes with a technology-and-luxury-laden cabin. A hp turbocharged inline-six is assisted by a volt hybrid system to deliver a silky-smooth experience, and the GLS's handling is poised and fluid, which makes it surprisingly fun to drive. All-wheel drive and air suspension are both standard, and the GLS can be equipped with novel options such as a camera system that watches the road ahead for potholes. There's room for up to seven—although optional second-row captain's chairs reduce occupancy to six—and everyone should find the GLS's interior to be spacious and comfortable. Cirrus Silver is now an option, as is Espresso Brown with black leather upholstery. Buyers can also now order all-season floor mats. The GLS's turbocharged inline-six provides plenty of power and is just as smooth as the GLS's V-8, so we'd stick with that and put the extra dough toward some options. The Executive Rear Seat Plus package turns the second row into a luxurious zone with massaging seats, a wireless smartphone charging pad, a tablet controller for the GLS's infotainment system, plusher headrests, and side-impact airbags.

The Benz is handsome and tech-forward with a quartet of available powertrains that run the gamut from a simple turbo inline-four to a twin-turbo V A monolithic dashboard display provides almost as much digital real estate as Times Square, which is either impressive or annoying depending on your tastes. In contrast to rivals like the Genesis GV80 and the Volvo XC90 , the Mercedes offers more off-road capability when equipped with an optional air suspension that can provide more ground clearance or even shimmy the GLE to-and-fro to help extract itself from sand or mud.
