Mephisto is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Mephisto is an extra-dimensional Demon who rules a fiery pocket dimension that he calls "Hell" or "Hades" although it is neither the Hell of the Christian religion nor the Hades ruled by Pluto , the Olympian god of the dead. Mephisto calls his extra-dimensional realm "hell" in order to exploit Earth human beings' belief in a single being of absolute evil, who is often referred to as Satan, who rules such a realm. Mephisto resembles the traditional visual conception of the devil. It is not known whether this is Mephisto's true appearance, or one that he has adopted in order to resemble the devil. He also allows himself to be called names that human beings give to their conceptions of devils, such as Mephisto, a shortened form of Mephistopheles , the name given to the devil in the Faust legends [6] and of a possible fallen angel.

He destroyed them when he understood their true nature, but when this omnipotent entity committed cosmic suicide, Mephisto and the demons were brought back to life. Mephisto rules over his own dimension, which he calls Hell or Hades. It is a horrible place where demons are tortured and torture others, with fiery pits of smoke and lava. Mephisto is nearly unstoppable while in his dimension, possessing power rival to a hungry Galactus. It has its own demon army, which frequently wages war against other-dimensional creatures and armies, including Earth's heroes. Mephisto's Realm also is home to Mephisto's Castle, an imposing palace in which Mephisto dwells, and the Arena of Tainted Souls, where debased souls are forced to wage war in eternal combat for the demons' amusement.

Mephisto may be one of Marvel's most iconic, enduring villains - and that's no surprise considering he's based on the archetype of the Christian devil, pretty much the most iconic 'villain' in religion, folklore, and in some cases, even as a metaphorical force in world history. Marvel's comic book take on the concept of an omnipotent, omniscient infernal manipulator who rules over his own realm of eternal punishment through treachery and torture has had a similar impact on the history of the Marvel Universe. In fact, some Spider-fans seem to think a face-like shape on the bottom left-hand corner of the newly released Spider-Man: No Way Home poster seen here could be Mephisto hiding in plain sight, with some features such as arched brows and possible facial hair that could also tie his appearance to Doctor Strange.
