This paper offers the first systematic analysis of 'digital memetic nonsense' — clusters of seemingly meaningless digital texts imitated and circulated by many participants. We evaluated this phenomenon through two conceptual lenses: theories on nonsense in the pre-digital age and the techno-cultural conditions that facilitate its contemporary formations. A grounded analysis of nonsensical memes led to their typology into five genres: linguistic silliness, embodied silliness, pastiche, dislocations, and interruptions. In each of these genres, we show how digital nonsense may potentially serve as a social glue that bonds members of phatic, image-oriented, communities. Rather than being a reflection on 'referential meaning', digital nonsense is analyzed as a generative source of 'affective meaning' that marks the formation of social connections preceding cognitive understanding. We conclude by highlighting the potentially subversive implications of this shift for participatory barriers and community membership. Christopher Lehman. Yulia Petrova. Albert Ed. More than other network phenomena memes may help us explain how the internet is structured, showing the extent to which its surface chaos is in reality a highly organized system of practices of dispersion and diffusion. Yaroslava Soshynska. This obliteration of meaning may enable the creation of inclusive communities; as perpetually empty templates, nonsensical memes can potentially include anyone and anything, allowing a variety of participants to express their quirky creativity without being sanctioned. Solon Solomon. Pastiche as diffusion of meaning refers to memes in which the source has lost its meaning over time. This type of nonsense enables a quick and easy establishment of presence and affinity without the need to worry about creating novel referential meanings. Using these theoretical foundations, we now go on to investigate how digital memetic nonsense relates to both old formulations of nonsense and the features of digital environments. Therefore, interruptions, like other forms of digital memetic nonsense, may actually constitute a communal act.
