A troubled husband and executive adopts a beaver hand-puppet as his sole means of communication.

The Beaver is a psychological drama film [3] directed by Jodie Foster and written by Kyle Killen. Marking Gibson's and Foster's second collaboration since 's Maverick , it follows Walter Black, a depressed executive, who hits rock-bottom when his wife kicks him out of the house. At his lowest point, he begins to use a beaver hand puppet to communicate with people and overcome his issues. The film received mixed reviews from critics who praised Foster's direction and performances of the cast but found the premise absurd. He is kicked out by his wife, to the relief of their elder son Porter. Walter moves into a hotel. After several suicide attempts, he develops an alternate personality represented by a beaver hand puppet found in the trash.

An earnest, intermittently droll dramedy about a manic-depressive toy manufacturer and his bewildered family, The Beaver is a parable that's not easily parsed. While director Jodie Foster fails to maintain a consistent tone — could there be such a thing as inspirational satire? Walter Black Gibson is first seen floating in the chlorinated limbo of his backyard swimming pool; barely able to formulate a sentence, he's been diagnosed as "hopelessly depressed" and, once his exasperated wife Foster kicks him out of their Westchester digs, he's ineptly suicidal. As Walter trembles, drunk and disconsolate, on the ledge of his motel roof, the movie's mysterious Cockney-accented voiceover a ruder version of the gecko that sells insurance on TV is revealed to be that of Walter's manic self — a ratty hand puppet discovered in a dumpster that, once it starts talking to him, offers him a means to reinvent himself back into the world. There's no attempt to make it seem that Walter can throw his voice; on the contrary, the camera tends to focus on Gibson's lips flapping as he brandishes the puppet he's dubbed the Beaver. Still, Kyle Killen's script elaborates on the ventriloquism theme with a subplot involving Walter's eldest son, Porter Anton Yelchin : Busy as a beaver furnishing term papers to order, this Ivy League-bound high-school senior is hired by the school's smartest girl Jennifer Lawrence to ghostwrite her valedictorian address. Speaking through, even as he hides behind, his furry friend, Walter returns home. His younger son is delighted; his wife gets with the program once the Beaver explains that he's been prescribed by a shrink. Walter jogs and showers with the puppet; he also uses it to address his employees, inspiring them to mass-produce something called the "Mr. Beaver Wood-Cutting Kit. Gibson gives Walter's manic jag suggestive verisimilitude. Gibson may be no one's idea of a method actor, but his pleasure playing nut jobs seems weirdly confessional.

I'm hoping the movie does better. We are also guessing that if one can only communicate through a hand puppet like the protagonist of this film, he is in need of medical attention too. Support Us.

We start to see ourselves as a box that we're trapped inside and no matter how we try and escape, self help, therapy, drugs, we just sink further and further down. The only way to truly break out of the box is to get rid of it all together I mean, you built it in the first place. If the people around you are breaking your spirit, who needs them? Your wife who pretends to love you, your son who can't even stand you. I mean, put them out of their misery.

Anton Yelchin is quite a versatile actor and does drama well. The main character is a father and CEO that is in the middle of a great depression. And then the movie is over. He gets emotionally attached to Norah, feeling that she is repressing her desire to express herself regarding her brother's death, but his father's actions with the beaver puppet embarrass him. Is The Beaver an allegory on acting? But then he has great friends like Jodie Foster who believed in him and that is why The Beaver is a fascinating film - it tells the story of Mel Gibson and it is clothed in another tale that is probably highly unlikely in real life - BUT, it does explain why Gibson acted the way he did reading between the lines. Nor did anyone in the house ever hear these thundering bouts of insanity We start to see ourselves as a box that we're trapped inside and no matter how we try and escape, self help, therapy, drugs, we just sink further and further down. Jodie Foster. I'd personally have liked her line to have been more about the son himself, something about him that would then lead him to see his dad himself, rather than because he's been reminded that no matter what's been going on, his dad loves him. No, this is not a joke.

Unfortunately, while Yelchin is obviously very, very talented, i just can't see the leading man in him. Things To Do. This is one of those movies that, well, you watched it; you knew you had to - kind of like Schindler's List - then you put it away to never visit it again because you know the emotional pain that it delivers. The film was directed by Jodie Foster, a once in-the-closet lesbian. I won't get into debates over context and word choices in someone's private conversations or during a fit of rage. It is a very difficult thing to write a review about a movie that stars one of your all time favorite actors. After the first attempt fails he climbs on the edge of the balcony and is about to jump, but than, all the sudden, the beaver speaks out and brings him to his senses. Performances from Gibson and Foster were excellent as you would expect. I was. Whether he's Mel Gibson or "Mad Mel," it is entirely possible that like "The Beaver" does here, it may have allowed Gibson to seek some sort of therapy for his troubling personal issues. Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence the Valedictorian cheerleader have some nice moments together but their relationship is poorly developed and is treated at times like a distraction from the storyline involving Walter. She takes the maternal role in The Beaver — allowing Gibson the fun of babbling on like a hyperactive eight-year-old — but she clearly identifies, having cited her own struggle with depression in flacking the movie.
