Jiraiya appears as a perverted old man who occasionally returns to the village Konohagakure, reporting the activities master jiraiya Orochimaru and the organization Akatsuki.

The tale was originally a Yomihon that was published in —, [1] and was adapted into a serialized novel that was written by different authors and published in 43 installments from to ; one of its illustrators was woodblock artist Kunisada. Since then the story has been adapted into, several films, video games, and manga and has also influenced various other works. The story was later adapted many more times with variations in the story. The tale of Jiraiya starts with a poor, masterless samurai named Isami Gentaro, who's wrongfully jailed because he could not afford the rent for his farm. His family manages to get the money to pay his bail so Isami's father, Kirakusai, travels alongside his grandson, Tomokichi, to pay Isami's bail.

While Orochimaru suggested they kill them to spare them the cruelty of the world, Jiraiya decided to look after them for a while and teach them ninjutsu. During the time he spent with them, Jiraiya grew close to the three children, and even wrote a book that was inspired by one of them, Nagato. Eventually, he left them so that they could pursue their own goals. Although news of their exploits reached him from time to time, he thought them to have died during an undisclosed incident. Jiraiya took particular interest in Minato, taking him as an apprentice, and amongst other things teaching him the Summoning Technique.
