I don't want to start a price-flame war, but I'm simply curious as to why Marantz 7 preamps command such high prices compared to other tube preamps of their era. I've looked at a schematic for the Marantz preamp, and it appears to me to be a well-implemented, but fairly conventional, design. I have seen one opened up for service, before, though I've never heard one in operation, and the only unusual thing I noticed was the placement of the tubes. In fact, it doesn't seem to differ too much in terms of circuit design from the McIntosh C22 preamp, which I've seen offered at somewhat lower prices. For that matter, it wouldn't be hard to duplicate the Marantz design. Power amps are harder to copy due to the output transformers, but preamps are generally built from commonly available parts.

Postwar America; triumphant, affluent, dizzy with the pace of invention and innovation, saw a revelation in high fidelity with the advent of the monophonic vinyl record in But for commercial artist, industrial designer and electronics engineer Marantz, nothing commercially available was good enough — particularly when it came to the issue of a preamplifier dealing effectively with the many disparate phonographic equalization curves utilized by record labels at the time. So, he took it upon himself to design one incorporating multiple EQ curves, and following the DIY success of the Consolette, the Marantz Model 1 was created. While several other components preamps, power amplifiers and electronic crossovers followed the Model 1 in quick succession, it was the Model 7 Stereo Preamplifier which came to market in late that would garner the distinction of being one of the most legendary components in the history of home audio. Saul Marantz has been referred to as one of the most passionate advocates of high fidelity in its history. The oldest of three children, he came into the world on July 7th, in Brooklyn, New York and from a young age showed glimpses of the creative talent that was to come — building microscopes and experimenting with crystal radios. Despite being accepted into a NYC public school program for advanced students, he had to drop out in Grade 8 to get a job and help support his family financially. Continuing his training at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, he ventured into commercial art and represented clients like General Electric and Hanes. He met his wife, Jean Dickey, and got married in

I believe the prices paid for "Collectible" and "Performance" can be for very different, not necessarily aligned, motives. Our Artifacts prove this. Search Posts. From Asia??? I got interested in these in the late s, from having bought a book on restoring player pianos because it had a chapter on reed organs which I already collected. Show hidden low quality content. Regards, Jamie Campbell David Anderson wrote in message I don't remember any worry on their part about ancient Japanese art being pillaged, just that they wanted everything they could find to send home. They also collect them in Holland and Belgium Your donation supports a unique space for me to smash-up music journalism, alternative culture, high fidelity reviews and give volume to those stories and voices lost in the white noise of mainstream hi-fi media. Will they ever be desirable in the future? I recall clearly that our department consumer electronics-tv and hifi got a fantastic monthly Japanese hifi publication of eye-popping systems made up almost entirely of Western Electric,Mcintosh and Marantz gear. Just curious, John P. Up until now, I have never encountered such an ignorant and insensitive attitude among tube lovers, whether it be in person or on the net.
The Model 7 was a breakthrough in preamplifier design at its introduction in
They often commented on the easy availability of this stuff and how cheaply it could be had. Not only that. This conduit to carry a listener through time and space to the moment of the recorded performance is essential in high fidelity, and it is this link which helped the Marantz Model 7 establish a beach head for audio electronics… no longer a hobby where kits, prototypes or limited-production runs were built in the the shed or basement, the hi-fi was home. Amazing what I learned by just listening. Last edited: am. Apparently, it is unseemly in Japanese culture to engage in a flamboyant display of wealth at a time when much of the rest of the country is struggling. Share Facebook Twitter. Would you have people be saints? Which we probably STILL wouldnt buy because it would be more expensive that stuff made in now 3rd world countries. It was very noisy I must say. Modify the high level stage to be DC coupledand replace the balance control with a passive type centre tap to ground and the volume control with a blue velvet type wired either conventionally or in shunt mode. Anybody has the right to hate anybody for any reason, but I think most people in this NG would agree that as far as the use of racist terms, you should keep it to yourself.
You are mistaken. I suggest it to discuss. Write to me in PM, we will communicate.
In my opinion you are not right. I am assured. I can defend the position. Write to me in PM, we will communicate.
