The Maiar are primordial spirits that descended into Arda to help the Valar first shape the World. They would took the form of Old Women, maiar lotr, very similar to that of the Wizards just in female form. There purpose was suposed to be the same as the purpose of the Wizards to aid and guide the Free Peoples of Middle-earth and to maiar lotr Sauron.

The Maiar singular: Maia are a fictional class of beings from J. Tolkien 's high fantasy legendarium. The name Maiar is in the Quenya tongue one of several languages constructed by Tolkien from the Elvish root maya- "excellent, admirable". Commentators have noted that since the Maiar are immortals but can choose to incarnate fully in Men's bodies on Middle-earth, they can be killed; Tolkien did not explain what happened to them then. Tolkien stated that "Maia is the name of the Kin of the Valar , but especially of those of lesser power than the 9 great rulers". In the Valaquenta , Tolkien wrote that the Maiar are "spirits whose being also began before the world, of the same order as the Valar but of less degree". Being of divine origin and possessing great power, the Maiar can wander the world unseen or shape themselves in fashion of Elves or other creatures; these "veils", called fanar in Quenya , could be destroyed, but their true-being could not.

They were numerous, yet not many were named, and few also took visible shapes in Middle-Earth. Each of the Maiar was associated with one or more particular Vala, and were of similar stock, though less powerful. In the vast lore of The Lord of the Rings , there are a plethora of characters that wield massive amounts of power. From the Dark Lord Sauron all the way to the ancient dragons such as Smaug. Yet, there are many creatures just as powerful that do not get enough attention. Or, more accurately, they do not get the appropriate amount of attention on origins and nature. This, of course, is in reference to the Maiar, one of the most powerful classifications of beings within the world of Arda, and a people that are still very much relevant today by the time the Fellowship of the Ring was formed. Most fans would know them in the form they chose to better fit into this world: The Wizards.

He was associated with light and fire, much like Varda [3] , yet his ways often took him to Nienna, from whom he learned pity and patience. He loved the Elves , but walked unseen among them, or wore the guise of an Elf, and sent them fair visions in their hearts that made them wiser.
