Previous builds of mine would rely on it for ranged offense and support, but never the primary form of dealing damage. So, I ended up starting up my copy of Skyrim again. The resulting character was a blast to play. Though the primary reliance is on Magicka, the War Mage can and will throw himself into the thick of combat and thus needs a solid health pool. Stamina is more or less unnecessary. It is absolutely deadly when paired with Destruction magic, enabling him to throw a massive barrage of spells at enemies before they even reach him. At higher levels, I also like Become Ethereal so I can cast my master level spells without interruption. Finally, Dragon Aspect is absolutely wonderful, so pick that up as well. Secret Servant summons a Dremora Butler that can carry your excess items, helpful since the War Mage is limited to natural carrying capacity. Also consider wearing the Jagged Crown, as it can be worn on top of Dragon Priest Masks, and if you reverse pickpocket it onto Hadvar, you can keep the crown and finish the associated quest. Daedric Armor of Revival: You should be able to get this at the Atronach Forge via the sigil stone and random daedric enchanted armor piece recipe. While farming the Atronach Forge, also keep an eye for anything enchanted with fortify alchemy for making stronger potions and poisons. Daedric Gauntlets: Create these at the Atronach Forge using its specific recipe not the random armor one , and enchant it with Fortify Magicka. Ignite is a deadly little spell and it stacks!

In this discussion, I'd like to explore the various options available to those who want to create a build for or just play! This is the first in what I hope can be a series of discussions - not just discussions started by me, but by anyone who wants to get into the nitty-gritty of character build theorycrafting. So, this isn't a discussion about a finished, polished, playtested build, but a discussion focused on the process. Comments, feedback, disagreement, etc. So if you'd like to play, I'd recommend starting a discussion with the "Let's Build:" title, and coming up with a character concept that you'd like to run through the paces of the CB group's collective genius. Let's see what we can come up with!
But the true power of the skyrim mage comes not just from burning, freezing, electrifying and blowing away the draugr scum infesting your homelands, but from the versatile and creative opportunities afforded by a carefully built mage dovahkiin. Levitating objects, paralysing your foes, wrapping yourself in dragonhide, repelling the undead and conjuring powerful allies can make you an unstoppable force. The links below are a jump menu. Unlike archery, where you can slow down time as you line up a wisp in your crosshairs, firebolts and lightning strikes need to be aimed and fired in real time. Some of the sections below give away plot points in some side quests. The best race in Skyrim for a pure mage build is almost definitely the Altmer High Elf. Altmer have the racial abilities Highborn and Fortify Magicka. The latter starts you off with an extra 50 Magicka in your pool.

Every available race in Skyrim has some sort of blurb that describes the kind of class they are best suited for in combat, with human races generally being better at melee combat while the beast races are considered the best at stealth gameplay. It also means that Magicka-boosting enchantments are less of a concern, freeing up slots for other enchants, such as resists or fortifications. The most common mistake is to take too much damage and not use your speed and range to your advantage. Most adventurers either prioritize magic or melee weapons; however, the Spell-Sword build proves that it is possible to create a balanced character that focuses on both one-handed weapons and on the schools of magic. Runes can also damage multiple enemies at once, which is great if you're fighting a group of enemies. No meaningful progress For The Underwater Wizard, you'll be using frost magic since it matches perfectly with the water theme. Players should prepare for a fight with potions, summoning an Atronach or any other helper, as well as equipping the first spells they want to start off with, such as Oakflesh. Secondly, you then get access to some very hardy battle buddies Dremora Lords who can act as your personal body guards as you focus on raising the rest of your magic arsenal. You earn Spellbreaker by completing "The Only Cure" quest.
That's because the game hasn't done a great job at balancing magic in the long run. Spellcasters tend to fare well early into the game but struggle later on as their damage tanks compared to other builds like the classic stealth archer and even two-handed warrior. With how much close-range combat is included in the game, it can also feel daunting to even attempt playing a mage.
There are a plethora of ways to create a unique build using conjuration spells , and using your magic to conjure Daedric entities to fight by your side is one of the most fun ways. Powerful relics like the Staff of Magnus and Dragon Priest masks are great additions to any mage-centric build , as they can not only give the player another avenue of skills to use but also enhance the skills that they are more focused on. Sort of a Paladin, heavy or light armor, your choice, but no deadric anything. In the mid to late game Alchemy can be one of the best money-makers in Skyrim. Animage: spells work on higher-level animals. Necromancy: undead summons last longer. Alteration makes the difference between a wimpy mage that constantly dies and a more robust dovahkin. I have a lvl 71 generalist mage with expert to master perks for all schools, plus enchanting and some alchemy.
