Castle Macgarrett Old, County Mayo now in ruinsbuilt in the 13th century, is situated on the banks of the River Robe. Castle Macgarrett was once the ancestral home of the Browne Family. When this house became unsafe, due to a large fire inmacgarret, Geoffrey Browne and his wife Mary Prendergast built the new macgarret now known as Castlemacgarrett Nursing Home. Large quantities of the Beech trees planted by Geoffrey years ago can still be seen macgarret the old estate macgarret.
Castle Macgarret is a unique project that involved converting and expanding an abandoned castle that was previously used as a nursing home into a modern hotel. The project's ambition was to restore the historical character of the castle while also introducing modern amenities and sustainable practices to create a luxurious and comfortable stay for guests. To achieve this ambitious goal, the client selected AB Architects to work on the project. AB Architects was chosen for its reputation in uncovering hidden opportunities and providing innovative yet commercially sound solutions. The client wanted to understand the potential of the building, and AB Architects was able to provide a comprehensive analysis and design plan to meet the client's goals. However, the project faced numerous challenges. The castle was in a poor state of conservation, both internally and externally, and required substantial work to be restored to its former glory.
Macgarret
Castle MacGarrett was built in as the family home for a wealthy land-owner. It later became a nursing home for nuns, and features ornate ceilings. Castle MacGarrett sometimes spelt MacGarret or Castlemacgarrett was built and owned by the Browne family, who had occupied the land for over five centuries. The remains of the original castle can still be found within the grounds, close to the river. The original castle was abandoned towards the end of the 17th century when it was deemed to be unsafe. A new residence was built further from the water, and served successive generations until when it was destroyed by fire. The current Castle MacGarrett, constructed following the fire, retained some parts of the previous building. In , Dominick Browne was born here and would later become the first Lord Oranmore Browne, the title of Oranmore being taken in light of the family lands and property at Oranmore, Co. He was appointed Privy Councillor of Ireland and became one of the 28 elected representative Irish Peers. The third Baron Geoffrey Browne , was responsible for building the main part of the present manor, early in the 20th century. In this wing you will find the Oratory and reception room, which ceilings are replicas of those in Leinster House. Around the castle itself, with a large farm attached, was bought by nursing sisters, and it was known as Castlemacgarrett Nursing Home until it was sold again for development in
