Liveship
The Liveship Traders Series. Book 1.
Set in a land bordering the Six Duchies, Robin Hobb begins her epic tale of pirates, talking ships, magic, sea serpents, slave revolts, dashing heroes and bloody battles. Wizardwood, the most precious commodity in the world, comes only from the Rain Wilds. But only a liveship can negotiate the perilous waters of the Rain Wild River, and liveships are hard to come by. They quicken only when three family members from successive generations have died upon their deck. The liveship Vivacia is about to undergo her quickening: Althea Vestrit waits for the ship that she loves more than anything in the world to awaken. And the dark, charming pirate Kennit also lusts after such a ship: he well knows the power of wizardwood and has plans of his own.
Liveship
A liveship is a ship made partially out of wizardwood. Liveships are renowned for their sentience, which they achieve after three members of their family die aboard them. When the Rain Wild Traders began excavating the buried Elderling city of Frengong , they discovered what appeared to be logs inside a chamber. Splitting the logs revealed a pale carcass which the Traders discarded. The log material, which became known as wizardwood, proved undamaged by the acidic Rain Wild River , and was therefore immensely valuable. Each discovered log was used to create one liveship, with the exceptions of the two logs used to create the Paragon and the log that contained Tintaglia. Unbeknownst to the Traders, the logs were actually dragon cocoons, created from a combination of dragon saliva, river sediment, and dragon memories. Each cocoon contained the spirit of the dragon that was to hatch from it, and was intended to be devoured upon their hatching. The sentience of a liveship is therefore a combination of the dragon spirit stored within the wizardwood and the human memories absorbed during the ship's use. The first liveship was the Tarman , which lacks a figurehead.
Her old shipmate Brashen Trell, liveship, the enigmatic woodcarver Amber and the Paragon, the notorious mad Liveship are the only allies she can rally to liveship cause.
Over the years I have been asked time and time again for recommendations of female authors in the fantasy genre. Although there are many excellent female authors in the fantasy genre today, my go to answer is always Robin Hobb. There are few authors whom write beautiful prose the way that Hobb does while at the same time emotionally destroy you, as she is not very kind to her characters. In my humble opinion, The Liveship traders trilogy is the best example of Robin Hobbs work and it is my favorite series written by her. This series does take place in the Realm of the Elderlings world, but the series can absolutely be read on its own with little to no input from her other series.

She's a woman who loves and admires her husband so much that she's become accustomed to deferring to him and letting him have his own way both with her and her family. I love the concept of the liveships!! Tapa blanda. The more wilder cards is the narrative of sea serpents, I have no idea how that is related to the plot, can't wait to figure it out. After reading the Farseer triology, I just wanted more of Fitz and his adventure, so I was skeptical about reading a totally orthogonal story in the realm. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. This article comes from Den of Geek UK. Since this article is aimed at those who may not have read all of these books, spoilers will be kept to an absolute minimum — though a discussion of the overall development of a long-running series will inevitably involve some indication of where the early books are heading. However, unlike some other long-running fantasy sagas, this series is sub-divided into four trilogies and a quartet, written in a variety of styles — most notably, nine in the first person and seven in the third person — and with widely varying tone and setting.

Robin Hobb has a wondrous way to explore complex emotions and internal struggles of the characters. Describing the Liveship Traders as his favorite work by Hobb, author Orson Scott Card felt that she "arguably set the standard for the modern serious fantasy novel". The war in the north has interrupted the trade that is the lifeblood of Bingtown, and the Liveship Traders have fallen on hard times despite their magic sentient ships. Truly one of the best books I have ever read.
