As the team's schedule increased in difficult, head coach Derek Schaub was able to keep the program in good standing and got the Lions to post a win season That season saw the team reach the championship game but it was only the beginning for the Lions. The following year Lindenwood was a juggernaut, going 42—4 and winning their first championship while outscoring opponents to After a second dominating championship in , Schaub stepped down and turned the team over to assistant coach and former NHL player, Rick Zombo. Under Zombo's leadership the Lions continued to be a national contender, reaching the championship in his first season and eventually winning their third title in In the school announced its plan to have the men's team finally follow the Lady Lions into the varsity ranks and the program began to transition in that direction. While the school did not officially state that the team would be a Division I program in , multiple news reports indicate the program was on track to secure the needed funding.

Lindenwood opens the season with four games on the road starting on Saturday, October 7, with a two game-series against Air Force. With the victory, Lindenwood became the first men's hockey program this century to earn their first Division I win after trailing by two or more goals. The Lions remain on the road through October closing the month with a visit to the University of Michigan, who made a Frozen Four appearance last season. The following weekend the Lions will host Long Island University November , the Sharks compiled a record last season. Lindenwood concludes the first half of the season, with a visit to Kalamazoo, Michigan to take on the Western Michigan University Broncos ranked 11 overall with a record and NCAA tournament appearance a year ago. The Broncos will make a return trip to Maryland Heights to start the portion of the season on January The Lions will host Stonehill for the second consecutive year on January A final road trip for the year will see the team head to sunny Tempe, AZ the first weekend in February for a two-game series. The Sun Devils will play their final season as an independent program this year, before joining the National Collegiate Hockey Conference NCHC and concluded last season with an record.
