Liverpool has always been a brilliant city - but in the last 15 years the city centre has changed drastically, thanks to redevelopment and the creation of Liverpool ONE. Many of the city's main streets have been transformed in recent years, with some sections of the city unrecognisable from just a few years ago. Lime Street station has just re-opened following a huge refurbishment, but even before the new platforms were installed this summer, the change from the early 's is remarkable. With this in mind we decided to dive into our photo archives and discover just how much the cityscape has changed. Before the front of Lime Street station featured an arcade of shops and an office tower block. In July the shops and tower block were demolished and work began on creating the new station frontage and redeveloping the area.

The station consists of a mainline and an underground railway station and is the largest railway station in Liverpool city centre. It is managed by Network Rail. The station, however, was replaced by a new station built by Sir William Tite in The new station was located on Lord Nelson Street and was built with an innovative iron segmental-arched vault train-shed. It is still in use and is the north vault of the present station. Added in , the second train-shed vault currently exists as the south vault of the station. It was again remoulded in A barrier-line building in the north vault and a glazed artwork screen in the south shed were also constructed during the same year. A Station Regeneration Programme was carried out between and to refurbish the train sheds. The station comprises of two sections, the Merseyrail Underground station and the mainline station.
