Liliana Vess is one of Magic The Gathering's oldest modern Planeswalkers, a member of what is known as the Lorwyn Five, a collection of the first five Planeswalker cards ever released. Liliana Vess has appeared in a large number of cards and Planes, being one of the most important characters in the Multiverse. She has been at the center of multiple conflicts as a hero and a villain. Liliana has gone by different names and made contracts with different demons and deities. She is a necromancer primarily aligned with black mana and has never been seen with any other color within her. Liliana was born on the Plane Dominaria and resided in the Benalia region with her father and brother Josu. There, she was a healer and a part of Forward Order, a group of clerics in the region. She studied under a woman named Ana. Though she studied healing magic, Liliana also became fascinated with necromancy and how it could help her in her healing. Tragedy would strike, and Josu was poisoned by his father's enemies. To cure him, Liliana was tasked with gathering the root of an Esis Tree, which Ana said would hold the cure for Josu. However, by the time Liliana arrived at the tree, it had already been destroyed. A man reveals himself and tells Liliana of an alternate cure that could save her brother. This man was the Raven Man , who would haunt Liliana for years to come. Liliana returned with the alternate cure and gave it to Josu despite protests from her mentor.

Liliana Vess is a human planeswalker from Dominaria and is both a master necromancer and a healer. For a while, she was dead to the Multiverse, her survival known only to select members of the Gatewatch. The Raven Man affectionally calls her Lili. Liliana is a tall woman with black hair and purple tattoos. She is charismatic, witty, and attractive, but profoundly cynical, cunning and egocentric. She cares little for others, seeing them as stepping stones on her path to greater power. It was this craving for power that brought her to the Chain Veil , an item she views with contempt at times, for its power comes at a terrible price.

Hello, everyone. Welcome to episode of Against the Odds. We didn't have an Against the Odds poll last week, which means that we have a special episode this week! Along with the release of Ixalan came a pretty significant rules change: rather than being under the planeswalker uniqueness rule, all planeswalkers were given errata so that they are now legendary. While that might not sound like a big deal, it does have one major impact on game play: you can now have more than one version of the same planeswalker on the battlefield! As such, we are heading to Modern this week to play Liliana Tribal, a deck that's overflowing with five different versions of Liliana along with some interesting support cards. Is it really possible that a deck built exclusively around Liliana can work in a format as powerful as Modern? Let's get to the videos and find out; then, we'll talk more about the deck!
